2019 Scandinavian Masters Golf Preview, Predictions, Betting Tips & Live Stream

The European Tour heads to Gothenburg, Sweden this week for the 2019 Scandinavian Masters at Hills Golf Club. An open field is headlined by local hero Henrik Stenson who will aim to impress in front of his home crowd. Ahead of Thursday’s first tee shot, I take a look at the form of the leading contenders, pick out a few outsiders, and provide my best value tips for the tournament.

2019 Scandinavian Masters Betting Odds

Below are the 10 leading contenders based on their win outright odds at the 2019 2019 Scandinavian Masters. All odds from bet365 and are correct on 20 August, 2019.

  • Henrik Stenson (9.00)
  • Matthew Fitzpatrick (9.00)
  • Alex Noren (13.00)
  • Erik Van Rooyen (15.00)
  • Andrea Pavan (19.00)
  • Andy Sullivan (31.00)
  • Thomas Detry (34.00)
  • Robert MacIntyre (34.00)
  • Joost Luiten (34.00)
  • Adri Arnaus (36.00)

2019 Scandinavian Masters Leading Contenders

Henrik Stenson (9.00)

Henrik Stenson opted to skip the highly lucrative FedEx Cup playoffs in favour of playing at his home event, so the Swede will be desperate to impress in his hometown. Stenson certainly has the form to succeed this week.

He reeled off three successive top-10 finishes worldwide at the Canadian Open, US Open, and Scottish Open before a tied-20th at the British Open and tied-27th at the WGC St Jude Invitational. Stenson’s game is in a good place and I am backing him to live up to his top billing at the Scandinavian Masters.

Matthew Fitzpatrick (9.00)

Matthew Fitzpatrick should provide one of Henrik Stenson’s biggest challenges this week. The Englishman has fine form at this tournament’s predecessor, the Nordea Masters – winning in 2016 and placing runner-up by one shot in 2017 – so will fancy the course setup at Hills Golf Club.

Additionally, Fitzpatrick enters the Scandinavian Masters after a tied-fourth at WGC St Jude, so has the current form and confidence heading into this week.

Alex Noren (13.00)

Alex Noren will also want to impress the home fans at the Scandanvian Masters this week. The Stockholm native has come into decent form in recent weeks, with a tied-11th at the British Open and a tied-12th at the WCG St Jude, although his most recent outing was a tied-60th at the Wyndham Championship. Noren is the sort of player who can go on red-hot streaks during a tournament, but I’m wary of backing him given his inconsistencies.

Erik Van Rooyen (15.00)

Erik Van Rooyen is a player I am certainly keeping my eye on at the Scandinavian Masters. The South African was in fine form last week at the D+D Real Czech Masters to place tied-fifth, the latest in a series of solid results (tied-14th at the Scottish Open, tied-20th at British Open). A top-10 finish at 2.25 looks a good price.

Andrea Pavan (19.00)

Andrea Pavan must be the most difficult player to predict on the European Tour at present. The Italian won the BMW Championship in June, only to miss his next two cuts at the Andalucia Masters and Irish Open.

He then placed tied-fourth at the Scottish Open, before missing the cut at the British Open. Pavan’s most recent effort was a tied-third at the Real D+D Czech Masters. If he performs at his best, he should contend at the Scandinavian Masters, but his wild inconsistencies present too much of a risk.

2019 Scandinavian Masters Outsiders

Robert MacIntyre (34.00)

Robert MacIntyre is enjoying a superb rookie campaign, the highlight being his tied-sixth at the British Open. The 23-year-old Scot also has runner-up finishes at the British Masters and Made in Denmark, and given his talent, I like the look of a top-20 finish at 2.62.

Joost Luiten (34.00)

Joost Luiten has not been in the best of form in recent months, but as a six-time winner on the European Tour, he knows how to win golf tournaments and he is one of the most accomplished players in the field.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout (41.00)

Christiaan Bezuidenhout registered his first European Tour win at the Andalucia Masters in June, holding off the likes of Sergio Garcia and Jon Rahm. The South African hasn’t featured in his three tournaments since, but the Hills Golf Club provides a similar course setup to Valderrama, which can see a return to the top of the leaderboard for Bezuidenhout.

Edoardo Molinari (56.00)

Edoardo Molinari has been quietly going about his business in recent weeks, claiming a tied-third at the BMW International and a tied-ninth at the Irish Open. Most recently, the Italian finished tied-14th at the D+D Real Czech Masters, so his game is in a good place. He is worth considering for a top-20 at 3.25.

2019 Scandinavian Masters Key Stats

  • Henrik Stenson shares the overall score (262) and under-par record (22-under) at the Scandinavian Masters’ previous iteration, the Nordea Masters. Stenson set the record in 2005 alongside Mark Hensby, who beat Stenson to the title in a playoff.
  • The 2019 Scandinavian Masters will be played to a 71-par over 7,169 yards.
  • Matthew Fitzpatrick won the Nordea Masters in 2016 and finished runner-up in his title defence a year later by one shot.

2019 Scandinavian Masters Betting Tips

Henrik Stenson may be winless this year but I am backing the popular Swede to end that drought at the 2019 Scandinavian Masters. Stenson’s game is in a good place and he will be  determined to justify his decision to miss the FedEx Cup.

Elsewhere, Erik Van Rooyen has the form to finish in the top-10 and Robert MacIntyre has the talent and momentum to claim a top-20.

Best Bet: E. Van Rooyen Top-10 @2.25 at bet365 - 3 Units
Value Bet: R. MacIntyre Top-20 @2.62 at bet365 - 2 Units

A mixed bag at the Scandinavian Masters. Erik van Rooyen won the tournament to deliver on our top-10 tip, although Robert MacIntyre's missed cut saw him fall well short of the top-20. Henrik Stenson was finished tied-third.
