When is the 2020 Scottish Open?

The 2020 Scottish Open will be held in July 2020.

Scottish Open Golf History

In 1935 Gleneagles hosted the first Scottish Open Championship at the King's course. In 1936 the tournament was played at Ayr Belleisle Golf Club and known as the Penfold Scottish Open, won by Jimmy Adams in a 36-hole playoff against Tom Collinge.

The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews (R&A) had issues with the competition being called a ‘Championship’ and the sponsorship arrangement. The event was cancelled before the start of the 1937 Open Championship which was to be held at the same course.

The Scottish Open resurfaced as the Sunbeam Electric Scottish Open in 1972 as part of the European Tour and held at Downfield Golf Club. In 1973 the Scottish Open was played on the Old Course at St Andrews.

1986 saw a revival of the Scottish Open with the event returning to the European Tour, replacing the Glasgow Open. Sponsored by Bell's, it was held in at Haggs Castle and was known as the Bell's Scottish Open.

Since 1987 the Scottish Open has been held the week before the Open Championship, the last chance to qualify for The Open alongside the John Deere Classic.

The 1987 Bell's Scottish Open was held at King's Course, Gleneagles which remained until Bell's withdrew their sponsorship in 1994. In 1995 and 1996 the tournament was held at Carnoustie without a sponsor.

The Scottish Open lost its pre-Open place on the European Tour in 1997 and went through different name changes such as Gulfstream Loch Lomond World Invitational, Standard Life World Invitational, Standard Life Loch Lomond and the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond.

In 2002 the tournament was known as the Barclays Scottish Open and held at Loch Lomond until 2010. There was concern that Loch Lomond was not similar enough to the links courses played at the Open Championship which put European Tour players at a disadvantage compared to the PGA Tour players.

In 2011 the Scottish Open moved to the Castle Stuart Golf Links where it would remain for three years. In 2014 the Scottish Open was held at Royal Aberdeen Golf Club, in 2015 at Gullane Golf Club, in 2016 at Castle Stuart Golf Links and in 2017 at Dundonald Links.

It returned to Gullane Golf Club in 2018 and will be played at the Renaissance Club in 2019.
The Scottish Open is one of the European Tour Rolex Series events that started in 2017 and ensures that each tournament in the Rolex Series has a minimum prize money of $7 million.

Wales' Ian Woosnam won three Scottish Cups, his firts two at the King's Course in Gleneagles in 1987 & 1990, before winning the 1995 Scottish Open at Carnoustie with the highest score in the history of the Scottish Cup at +1.

South Africa's Ernie Els is the only other play to win more than one Scottish Cup, both at Loch Lomond Golf Club. Els shot -11, returning to Loch Lomond in 2003 and winning with −17 by 5 strokes.

Who won the 2019 Scottish Open?

Austrian golfer Bernd Wiesberger won the 2019 Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open at Renaissance Club with a score of 262, -22 under par to tie with French player Benjamin Hebert. Wiesberger triumphed in the three hole playoff, shooting +1 with Hebert shooting +2.
