Rory McIlroy is being backed to emulate Phil Mickelson by following up a Scottish Open victory with Open Championship success.

McIlroy took the honours in Scotland last week, and he is now backed to become the first player to win the Scottish Open and The Open in back-to-back weeks since Phil Mickelson achieved that feat 10 years ago.

The Northern Irishman is 13/2 with Coral to end his nine-year Major drought this week.

“Although it's been 10 years since Phil Mickelson became the only man to date to win the Scottish Open and Open in the same year, punters have not been put off backing Rory McIlroy to follow suit,” Coral's David Stevens told FreeTips.com.

“There would surely be no more popular winner of the Claret Jug than the Northern Irishman.”

McIlroy’s main rivals for the Claret Jug this week are Scottie Scheffler at 7/1 and John Rahm at 11/1.

Defending champion Cameron Smith is 12/1 to become the first player to win back-to-back Open Championships since Padraig Harrington in 2007.
