When is the 2020 Tour Championship Golf?
The 2020 Tour Championship will be held in August 2020 with exact dates to be confirmed.
Tour Championship Golf History
The Tour Championship began in 1987 for the top 30 money winners on the PGA Tour. It remained that way until 2007 when the Tour Championship moved from November to September where it was the final four-tournament "Chase for the FedEx Cup".
The qualification process also changed, instead of prize money the amount of FedEx Cup points determined the field. It was also the first time that players who qualified for the Tour Championship earned an invitation to the US Masters.
Different golf courses hosted the Tour Championship from 1987 to 1996, and in 1997 the tournament alternated between Champions Golf Club in Houston and East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. The Tour Championship has been held at East Lake Golf Club since 2004.
The Tour Championship is the last tournament of the season before the money list is concluded. Due to the smaller field, there is no 36-hole cut with all players starting the tournament making the cut and earning prize money.
In 2009 the rules changed so that any top five FedEx Cup point leaders who won the Tour Championship would additionally be awarded the FedEx Cup. Tiger Woods went close in 2018, winning the Tour Championship but finishing second in the FedEx Cup. It was won by Justin Rose, who despite finishing fourth entered the Tour Championship 2nd with Woods ranked 20th.
In 2019 there were more alterations to the format:
1)The Tour Championship winner becomes the FedEx Cup champion. The tournament has a seeding handicap with the first seed starting -1, second seed −8, third seed −7, fourth seed -6, fifth seed at −5. Seeds 6–10 will begin at −4, seeds 11-15 will at −3 down to seeds 26-30 who start at even par.
2)The Tour Championship winner receives a 5-year PGA Tour exemption.
The seeding format is ignored for the Official World Golf Ranking. The gross score of all four rounds determines the winner for the ranking system. The winner of the Tour Championship is awarded ‘Calamity Jane’, an exact replica of Bobby Jones' original putter made from sterling silver.
