History

The US Masters Tournament was started by amateur champion Bobby Jones and investment banker Clifford Roberts. Jones co-designed Augusta National Golf Club with course architect Alister MacKenzie.

The tournament was first played in 1934 and has a number of traditions. Since 1949, a green jacket has been awarded to the champion, who must return it one year after his victory to be stored with other champions' jackets.

The Champions Dinner is held on the Tuesday before each tournament and is open only to past champions and board members of the Augusta National Golf Club.

Jack Nicklaus has the most Masters wins with six between 1963 and 1986. South Africa's Gary Player was the first non-American player to win the tournament in 1961.

The Augusta National golf course has been modified throughout the years with greens reshaped and re-designed, bunkers added, water hazards extended and hundreds of trees planted.

Tiger Woods won by 12 strokes in 1997, the biggest winning margin. He shot 270 18-under-par, Tom Kite next best after shooting a 282 6-under-par.

Dustin Johnson won the 2020 US Masters with a record score of 268, 20-under-par, finishing five shots ahead of Im Sung-jae and Cameron Smith.
