WGC St Jude Invitational Golf History
The St Jude Classic began as the Memphis Open in May 1958 at Colonial Country Club in Memphis, Tennessee. The professional golf tournament was a regular event on the PGA Tour from 1958 to 2018 and played at TPC Southwind from since 1989.
The WGC St Jude Invitational began in 1999 as one of the three original WGC events alongside the WGC-Mexico Championship and the WGC-Match Play. The WGC St Jude Invitational is the direct successor of the World Series of Golf, which ran from 1962 to 1998.
The first seven editions of the WGC Invitational were called the WGC-NEC Invitational and were hosted at the Firestone course in Ohio every year except for 2002 when it was played at Sahalee in Washington.
From 2006 until 2018, the tournament was called the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and was played exclusively at Firestone.
Tiger Woods won the first three WGC Invitational titles (1999, 2000, 2001) before repeating the feat in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Woods is the only multiple winner of the tournament. The record winning margin was achieved by Woods, who won the 2000 event by 11 strokes.
In 2019, FedEx took over sponsorship of the WGC Invitational and relocated the tournament to Memphis, Tennessee. The tournament was renamed the WGC-FedEx St Jude Invitational.
WGC St Jude Invitational Golf Results
Take some time to research past results of the WGC Invitational to see which players have fared well at the tournament in the past. While the 2019 WGC St Jude Invitational was played at a new venue, the course setup will be similar to past tournaments at Firestone so previous results will still give you an indication of who could excel this year. By evaluating past results, it can help give you an edge when making your bets.
