Esbjerg fought bravely in the Champions League semifinals against hosts Gyor but eventually lost the match 24-23. They couldn’t recover from the poor first half in which they found the net just nine times.
Esbjerg secured another title in Denmark last weekend. They were victorious in both duels against NFH, 25-20 on the road and 35-20 at home to lift the trophy.
To reach the final four tournament, Esbjerg eliminated Ferencvaros in the quarterfinals, winning the first tie in Hungary 26-25 and then finishing the job at home 29-24.
Metz Form
Metz were stunned in the Champions League semifinals by German champion Bietigheim, losing the match convincingly 36-29 despite having a minimal lead at half-time.
The French side had an extremely successful season so far, adding another piece of silverware to their collecting in late May by beating Dijon 29-20 in the French Cup finals.
Another trophy was clinched last weekend in the French Division 1. A 36-22 victory against Plan de Cuques clinched the domestic title for Metz, ending the campaign with 25 wins and just one defeat.
They were also successful in the Champions League quarterfinals, beating CSM Bucuresti 27-24 in Romania and 29-23 at home
Verdict
Metz will need some time to recover from a shocking and convincing defeat in the semifinals. Esbjerg could have easily ended up in the grand finals, so I will back them to win the 3rd place in Hungary.
