The Railway Stakes is the first major of the Perth Summer Racing Carnival and takes place on Saturday, November 23 over 1600m at Ascot.

Run under handicap conditions, this feature has held Group 1 status since 1979, with champion past winners including Better Loosen Up, Northerly, Old Comrade and Luckygray, who won two editions (2011 & 2013).

Light Infantry Man heads the 2024 Railway Stakes market, but there is value in taking on the favourite in the Group 1.

2024 Railway Stakes Tips

Best Bet - Zipaway

He profiles well for the Railway Stakes, where the gelding has 53kg (eight of the last nine winners have carried this impost) and four-year-old's have saluted in four of the last five editions.

Prepared by Neville Parnham, who is aiming for back-to-back Railway Stakes wins, Zipaway won the WA Guineas 12 months ago before placing in the Group 1 Northerly Stakes.

He was also competitive in two of three Melbourne appearances earlier this year, while going off his trial work and Lee Steere Stakes return, that trip away may have even brought him on.

Zipaway is a tough galloper who has tactical speed and with this Group 1 a clear target assignment for the campaign (no intent fresh), he has to be one of the leading hopes.

Next Best Bet - Port Lockroy

This visiting entire looked one of the better 100/1 chances you'll see in The Golden Eagle and he outperformed his starting price in that 1500m feature with a sixth-of-twenty finish.

Port Lockroy has been building into the campaign well and this well worth a shot at the stumps to get a Group 1 on the resume, with the four-year-old suited under the conditions.

He goes from giving a Group 1 winner in Stefi Magnetica 2kg to now getting relief and/or sharing weight with less credentialed horses, while he was also poorly in via the Silver Eagle.

A middle draw is perfect for Port Lockroy, as he does need galloping room from off the speed and on he what is often a momentum circuit, he could be launching late off a good tempo.

Value Bet - Triple Missile

After threatening to be one of the up-and-comers of the Australian sprinting ranks going into the 2023/2024 season, Triple Missile never recovered from a poor Derby Day steer that spring.

Now back in the west, the seven-year-old is being tried over 1600m for the second time and this trip is worth another look going off his Hyperion Stakes effort in winter before a spell.

He was also a touch unlucky via his Asian Beau return attempt on November 2 and having arrived to that fresh outing off one trial, there's clearly room for improvement second-up.

The opportunity at this level may have passed, however, it's hard to fault the most recent runs and as one of the more talented horses in this field, Triple Missile should be respected at big odds.
