The opening leg of the Australian Three-Year-Old Triple Crown starts Saturday with the running of the Group 1 Randwick Guineas.

Known as the Canterbury Guineas up until 2005 and contested over varying trips ranging from 1800 to 1900 metres, this race now has a permanent home over the Randwick mile.

Militarize is favourite to win the 2024 Randwick Guineas.

Best Bet - Celestial Legend

As the proven galloper with runs on the board and dropping to three-year-old company after splitting the Verry Elleegant Stakes quinella, Militarize was always going to start fav.

While the Chris Waller-trained colt is perhaps the safest, especially given the soft draw for a second-up target, I wonder if Celestial Legend is the better horse of the two now?

He wasn't knocked about last campaign, having completed just two runs in spring and given the lack of quality in this crop, Les Bridge knew what he had coming into the autumn.

Celestial Legend gave us a glimpse of that when winning the Hobartville Stakes, which is the traditional lead-up to the Randwick Guineas and he had to overcome trouble there.

With clear running earlier, the son of Dundeel would've won that second-up outing by three or four lengths and now third-up over 1600m, he could be ready to explode on Saturday.

Value Bet - Ceolwulf

The son of Tavistock showed that he was up to the class in his first campaign, which culminated with a second in the Group 3 Ming Dynasty, where he defeated Tom Kitten.

Ceolwulf once again proved that he could at the very least match it with the Spring Champion winner, as he finished just off the Godolphin colt via his Hobartville Stakes return.

Given the sole plain run over summer along with a February 12 trial which was fair at best, that February 24 outing at least showed connections that he's bounced back.

Although picking anything to turn the tables on Celestial Legend from the Hobartville is speculative, Ceolwulf didn't have the clearest of runs and he'll get more favours here.

His best hope of rolling the favs is by pushing forward and getting a tactical advantage, and from gate one in the Randwick Guineas, he'll get his chance to do that under Sam Clipperton.
