The Spring Champion Stakes is the premier three-year-old staying contest of the Sydney Spring Carnival with Swiftfalcon favourite for the three-year-old prize.

This 2000m feature dates back to 1971 and was given Group 1 status in 1979, which was celebrated in fine style with one of Australia's best-ever gallopers in Kingston Town taking out that edition.

Other champions to have won this event include Stylish Century, Tie the Knot and It's A Dundeel.

Swiftfalcon heads the 2024 Spring Champion Stakes market, with $3.50 his quote.

2024 Spring Champion Stakes Tips

Best Bet - Swiftfalcon

The Gloaming Stakes is the key form reference for this Group 1 and Swiftfalcon recorded easily the best run of that 1800m event when rattling home for second.

He recorded the fastest last 800m/600m/400m and 200m of that October 12 feature at Rosehill, where the gelding lost no admirers despite going down as fav.

Swiftfalcon had won his prior three outings and he should be fine at 2000m on breeding, being from the same family Champagne and St Reims (Group 1 winning stayers).

The obvious knock is another wide alley, however, the switch to Randwick is in his favour and come Race 7 on Sydney's feature program, we'll know how the track is playing.

Next Best Bet - Henlein

While Henlein lacked the brilliance of Swiftfalcon in the Gloaming Stakes lead-up, the son of Dundeel also chased hard in that Group 3 and he's looking for 2000m now.

That third-up tilt followed an eye-catching second at The Valley and that Stutt Stakes form reads well through Evaporate, who was good without luck in the Caulfield Guineas.

The Spring Champion Stakes has been the spring target for the Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained colt, who gets the visors applied and he now draws softly in gate one.

Henlein was able to take a position when drawing low via his debut win over 1300m and along with having more map favours here, he does have improvement to come.

Value Bet - Rag Queen

David Payne is an underrated trainer and he always has to be respected in these three-year-old saying events, with Rag Queen at her top now with three runs completed.

Payne is aiming for his third Spring Champion win, having prepared past winners in Ace High (2017) and Montefilia (2020), with the latter being was the last filly to salute.

Blinkers go back on Rag Queen for this 2000m attempt and while she was out-sprinted by Swiftfalcon at a key stage last time, she did pick up again late in the piece.

She impressed in her two runs last season, however, the daughter of D'argento has appeared more dour this campaign and she has the platform to run a big race here.
