The first Grade One of the new National Hunt season took place at Haydock this afternoon, as four top-quality chasers battle it out in the 2023 Betfair Chase.

Protektorat ran out an emphatic winner of this race 12 months ago and Dan Skelton's star returned to defend his crown. Topping the market was Bravemansgame, who was expected to go straight to the King George following his comeback run in the Charlie Hall Chase, but Paul Nicholls said his stable star came out of his reappearance so well, he had to take his chance at Haydock.

Royale Pagaille finished second to A Plus Tard in the 2021 Betfair Chase and Venetia Williams' chaser sat third in the market. Grand National hero, Corach Rambler rounded off the field.

Much of the talk leading up to the main event at Haydock revolved around Paul Nicholls' decision to book Daryll Jacob to ride Bravemansgame. Stable jockey, Harry Cobden was sent to Ascot - where he rode three impressive winners - allowing Nicholls to call upon Jacob, a three-time winner of the Betfair Chase aboard Bristol De Mai.

Jacob always liked Bristol De Mai to bounce out in front and he was keen to make the running on Bravemansgame. Protektorat made a couple of early errors, but Harry Skelton allowed his mount to move into a narrow lead as the field passed the stands for the first time.

Protektorat never seemed to relax at any point. Skelton's mount skied several jumps and landed on top of a couple, and it was the defending champion who was the first to beat a retreat.

Royale Pagaille, who had sat third throughout the contest, moved up to challenge Bravemansgame on the turn for home and Charlie Deutsch's mount established a clear lead on the approach to the third-last. Bravemansgame stuck to his guns valiantly, switching to the inside to try and challenge before the final flight. Yet, it was Royale Pagaille who produced the better jump and Venetia Williams' star kicked clear to claim a convincing victory.

Bravemansgame was forced to settle for second place. Corach Rambler, who was taken off his feet by the pace of the rest, kept going well to finish third ahead of Protektorat, who was the last of the four runners to cross the line.
