Saturday's card at Newmarket may feature two prestigious Group Ones, but the big betting race on the card is undoubtedly the namesake race of the meeting, the Cambridgeshire Handicap. This nine-furlong handicap was first held on the Rowley Mile back in 1839 and a field of 35 talented handicappers will contest Saturday's renewal.

We've taken a look through the odds and listed some key trends for the Cambridgeshire, before picking out our best ITV Racing betting tips.

The hot-favourite this year is Mujtaba, who was beaten as the favourite in the Lincoln at the start of the season.

William Haggas' four-year-old is three pounds well-in at the weights, following an impressive handicap triumph at Doncaster two weeks ago. However, there have only been four winning favourites in the Cambridgeshire this century and two of those were John Gosden-trained three-year-olds.

The average winning SP in that time is around 20/1 and we've seen two 40/1 winners and a 50/1 winner in the last five years. It usually pays to take the market leaders on.

2022 Cambridgeshire Handicap Trends

  • 13 of the last 15 winners were three, four or five years old
  • 13 of the last 15 winners ran within the last six weeks
  • 12 of the last 15 winners were rated between 94 and 104
  • 11 of the last 15 winners returned an SP of 11/1 or longer
  • 10 of the last 15 winners had won that season
  • 10 of the last 15 winners finished fourth or better last time out
  • 10 of the last 15 winners carried between 8-07 and 9-02
  • 10 of the last 15 winners ran in a Class Two Handicap last time out
  • 10 of the last 15 winners were drawn in stall 15 or wider
  • 9 of the last 15 winners had previously won over 1m2f

As you can see from the draw trend above, being drawn near the stand's rail is massively beneficial. All of the last seven winners were drawn in stall 20 or wider. 64% of the top five placers in the last 15 years have been drawn in the second half of the draw, so if you're ante-post selection lands a low draw, that could be fatal to their chances.

2022 Cambridgeshire Handicap Tip 1 - Dual Identity

William Knight's only recent runner in the Cambridgeshire was Sir Busker, who was well-beaten from a terrible low draw two years ago. Yet, this race has clearly been the plan for DUAL IDENTITY, who hasn't run since finishing a close second behind Protagonist at Sandown six weeks ago.

Knight's four-year-old went into the Kensington Gates handicap on the back of an excellent course-and-distance victory around Sandown, where he quickened away smartly in the closing stages to win by three lengths. Andrea Atzeni's mount ran keen out the back early on, but picked up gamely down the outside of the field once asked for an effort, hitting the line hard less than a length behind the winner.

Dual Identity is at his most comfortable over ten furlongs. He clearly possesses a nice turn-of-foot though, so I can't see this slight drop back in trip troubling him. Off his current mark of 91, I could see Knight's charge going well - so long as he lands a favourable high stall when the draw is made at Newmarket Racecourse.

*Update*

The draw hasn't done us any favours, after Dual Identity was placed in stall six. They say that trends are there to be broken and there are some good horses drawn on his side of the track. Still, from that draw, Andrea Atzeni may have his work cut out.

2022 Cambridgeshire Handicap Tip 2 - Arqoob

For my second selection, I'm going to put my trust in another William. Not Haggas - who's record in the Cambridgeshire is terrible - but William Jarvis, who could have his first runner in this handicap if ARQOOB is confirmed.

Like Dual Identity, Arqoob has won over ten furlongs at Sandown this season, carrying odds of 33/1 into the winners' enclosure on Coral-Eclipse day. Since that excellent win off 89, Jarvis' four-year-old has twice placed off his current mark of 93 - running on well from off the pace to place fourth behind Protagonist and Dual Identity, before a solid third in a very high-quality Class Two at Yarmouth last time out.

The form of that Yarmouth race was boosted greatly when the winner, Marching Army followed up at the St Leger Festival last week. Arqoob is clearly capable of winning off his current rating and could run well at a massive price.

*Update*

Unlike our first selection, Arqoob has landed a wide draw. William Jarvis' mount will come out of the widest stall of all in gate 29. Connor Planas comes in to take a further seven pounds off Arqoob's back, meaning he'll carry just 8-2 into this huge handicap. Fingers crossed for a big run!

Verdict

Dual Identity and Arqoob are our two against the field in the 2022 Cambridgeshire Handicap.
