Before we reach the namesake race of the Cambridgeshire Meeting, there's the small matter of the Middle Park Stakes to settle first. This Group One for juvenile colts was first staged at Newmarket in 1866, and it's been won by legends like Pretty Polly, Abernant, Brigadier Gerard and Dark Angel during its illustrious history.

This year's renewal is looking as competitive as ever, and it's possible we could see a future star of the sport claim their first Group One on Saturday. I've taken a look through the form on offer and picked out my best bet.

Minzaal lit up the Ebor Festival at York last month, surging clear to win the Gimcrack Stakes by two lengths. Owen Burrows is enjoying one of his best training season's to date, and Minzaal looks a horse with significant potential.

Three pattern-race winners follow closely behind Minzaal in the betting. The first of those is Martyn Meade's Method, who extended his unbeaten record into a second race with a sparkling victory in the Rose Bowl Stakes.

Lucky Vega beat The Lir Jet and Aloha Star to win the Phoenix Stakes, and drops back in trip having finished fifth in the National Stakes on Irish Champions Weekend.

Supremacy ran away with the Richmond Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, and Clive Cox's juvenile is the highest-rated runner in the field.

Royal Ascot winners, Tactical and The Lir Jet could have a second crack at a Group One at Newmarket on Saturday. While the Lir Jet doesn't hold much appeal, Tactical clearly didn't enjoy the ground conditions in the Prix Morny, and his victories in the Windsor Castle and July Stakes put him right in the picture for the Middle Park.

Nando Parrado, who won the Coventry Stakes as a 150/1 shot, could also appear, having followed Campanelle home in the Prix Morny. While his form stacks up, I think Clive Cox's second string has been a little flattered by those results, and he doesn't have the appeal of those ahead of him in the market.

Aidan O'Brien is the winning-most trainer in the Middle Park Stakes, and his hopes lie with St Mark's Basilica, who's won just one of his four starts this season. Despite his record, St Mark's Basilica clearly has plenty of ability. Trips beyond six furlongs will be his forte, though, and I doubt he'll have the speed to contend if he does run this weekend.

Lipizzaner could join his stablemate in the stalls on Saturday. Charterhouse completes the current betting, but I can't see Joseph Murphy's charge landing a significant blow.

This looks a cracking renewal of the Middle Park Stakes. You could make a strong case for all four of the leading contenders, and even Tactical holds a good deal of appeal at an each-way price, providing more than eight remain in the final field.

Lucky Vega has already won a Group One this term, and dropping back in trip seems sensible. I just worry that he had a hard race in the National Stakes, and 13 days is a pretty swift turnaround, especially for juveniles, who're yet to reach peak physical condition.

Mehmas has had an excellent first season as a sire, and there's a strong chance he could have his first Group One success on Saturday. Minzaal, Supremacy and METHOD are all by Mehmas, and my slight preference is for the latter of the three.

Martyn Meade's budding star may not have run in company higher than Listed level, but his form really does stack up. Method destroyed his rivals at both Doncaster and Newbury. The field's were strung out behind the runaway winner on both occasions.

Fev Rover finished second behind Method on debut, and has since won a Group Two out in France. Might Gurkha crossed the line second behind the favourite in the Rose Bowl Stakes at Newbury, and he's gone on to win a Group Three on the all-weather at Kempton.

The time's Method has recorded so far have been very good, and he clearly had a little left in the tank on both occasions. Frankie Dettori's mount has winning form on good-to-firm ground, and he proved at Newbury that he had the balance to triumph on an undulating track.

It's clear Method has an enormous amount of ability, and victory on Saturday would surely push Meade's charge to the head of the 2021 2000 Guineas betting.

Method looks a star in the making - as do several in Saturday's race - and I fancy he will land the Middle Park.

Frankie Dettori has won this race for John Gosden, Peter Chapple-Hyam and twice for David Loder. Martyn Meade could add his name to that list, when Dettori rides Method to victory.
