Racing fans were treated to another fascinating festival season of racing over Christmas and New Year. Many horses thrust themselves into the spotlight, while others failed to run up to the level required to dine at the top table.
Here are four horses who've impressed in the last week, and look worthy of backing at the 2021 Cheltenham Festival.
2021 Cheltenham Festival Tips - Ante-Post Accumulator
2021 Supreme Novices' Hurdle Tips - Appreciate It
Willie Mullins' charge may have been pipped to the post by Ferny Hollow in the 2020 Champion Bumper, but it's hard to see what's going to be APPRECIATE IT in the 2021 Supreme Novices' Hurdle.
Paul Townend needed only hands and heels to help Appreciate It win on his hurdles debut, beating future winner Master McShee in good style. Appreciate It then beat Ballyadam in convincing fashion in the Future Champions Novices' Hurdle at Leopardstown over Christmas, powering through the line to seal a nine-length success.
There's now a massive gap between Appreciate It and his other rivals in the Supreme betting. With Ferny Hollow out for the season, he certainly seems Willie Mullins' Supreme horse, and the opener on day one of the Cheltenham Festival looks Appreciate It's for the taking.
2021 RSA Novices' Chase Tips - Monkfish
Despite looking like a big, raw chaser in the making, MONKFISH was classy enough to win the Albert Bartlett at Cheltenham last season.
Willie Mullins' charge then made mincemeat of his rivals on his chasing debut at Fairyhouse. A maiden Grade One win over the larger obstacles followed at Leopardstown, where Monkfish made all to beat Latest Exhibition with a little left up his sleeve.
Softer ground, around a more testing track like Cheltenham is only going to help Monkfish. He definitely looks like the one to back in the race formerly known as the RSA Novices' Chase.
2021 Triumph Hurdle Tips - Zanahiyr
Gordon Elliott endured a torrid time over Christmas, with his stable really struggling for form. The only bright spark was ZANAHIYR, who maintained his unbeaten record over hurdles in the Frank Knight at Leopardstown.
Zanahiyr set the quickest time of the afternoon when winning a Grade Three on Bar One Racing Day at Fairyhouse. Jack Kennedy's mount then proved he could quicken up off a slow pace at Leopardstown, where he won going away from his rivals.
I'm sure there's more to come from this strapping young horse, and he looks the juvenile to beat in the 2021 Triumph Hurdle.
2021 Gold Cup Tips - Al Boum Photo
Over Christmas, we saw 20/1 and 12/1 shots win the two big Grade Ones for staying chasers. Both Frodon and A Plus Tard now have to be considered for the Gold Cup, but it would be a shock if either were able to win.
Santini has failed to impress on both his starts this season, and Nicky Henderson hasn't been able to get Champ fit enough to run. Minella Indo came a cropper at Leopardstown, and the likes of Lostintranslation, Delta Work and Presenting Percy will have to bounce back following poor performances over Christmas.
In contrast, AL BOUM PHOTO came out and won at Tramore for the third year in a row, cruising to a 19-length victory over Acapella Bourgeois. He will now go straight to the Gold Cup, where he will bid for a famous hat-trick.
With no-one enforcing their claims for selection over Christmas, Al Boum Photo seemingly has one hand on the Gold Cup already.
