Triumph Hurdle history

The Triumph Hurdle is run exclusively for four-year-old hurdlers and was first run in 1939 when taken out by Grey Talk for George Batchelor.

With eight hurdles to be jumped over the 3,420m course, the Triumph Hurdle is as much about speed and it is about jumping.

Despite being only a novice hurdle, it’s one of the more popular races during the Cheltenham Festival and with a Grade 1 level, it attracts punters from all around the world.
Originally held at Hurst Park in Surrey, the Triumph Hurdle was more attractive for horses from France, with six of the first seven winners French-based. It was transferred to Cheltenham in 1965 and was first planned for the April meeting, but it became a staple fixture of the festival in 1968.

The winner of the Triumph Hurdle often goes on to compete in the Champion Hurdle, with four winners going on to complete the double – Clair Soleil, Persian War, Kribensis and Katchit.

The leading jockey is Barry Geraghty with five wins from 2003 to 2016 and the leading trainer is Nicky Henderson with six wins, with his latest coming in 2015 with Peace And Co.

It has been sponsored by JCB since 2002 after being sponsored by the Daily Express and Elite Racing Club for years prior.

2019 Triumph Hurdle replay

The 2019 Triumph Hurdle was taken out by Pentland Hills. It was a race marred by the injury of race-favourite Sir Erec, which was unfortunately put down as a result.
