Doomben Cup Tips & Betting Predictions
Punters don't often see an international contingent of thoroughbreds run during the Brisbane Winter Carnival but two Japanese runners are at the top of the market.
Although both Ambitious and Satono Rasen are now trained in Australia, they bring over strong Japanese staying form and that typically stacks up well in Australia.
Anthony Freedman lines up six-year-old Ambitious, which raced in the Group 1 Yasuda Kinen at Tokyo last June before coming over to Australia and having three runs to date.
He finished ninth in the Australian Cup before improving to run second in the Group 1 Tancred Stakes at Rosehill behind 2016 Melbourne Cup winner Almandin.
The son of Deep Impact wasn't able to repeat that effort behind Winx in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at The Championships but he faces a much easier field here and there's a good deal of confidence in the market at $4.50.
Fellow Japanese runner, Satano Rasen, doesn't quite have the same Japanese form guides that Ambitious has but he went well last time out and should be considered here.
The Chris Waller-trained import finished fourth in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes last start and considering that was only his second run in Australia, he should take plenty of improvement out of that effort.
He's only a three-time winner from 23 but don't rule him out and there's some good value on offer at $7.
On the same line at $7 is Oregon's Day, which defeated a handy field in the Hollindale Stakes last start to record her first major victory.
It was only a matter of time before the four-year-old mare scored a big win and her confidence will be sky high after beating the likes of Satano Rasen and Tom Melbourne last start.
She enjoys sitting just off the pace and given the speed from the likes of Ecuador and Consensus, that should give Oregon's Day every chance to wind up in the straight and show her quality again.
This is poised to be a hotly-contested Doomben Cup this Saturday and there's great value in the market for the Brisbane Winter Carnival feature.
Best Bet: Ambitious to win @ $4.50
