Bathrat Leon made all to claim a shock victory in this race 12 months ago. Ryusei Sakai's raider was drawn perfectly in stall one that day and may find it harder to dominate from the front from a wider draw in stall eight.
DESERT WISDOM wasn't beaten far behind Bathrat Leon in last year's Godolphin Mile. Adrie de Vries' mount was well beaten behind Algiers on his first two starts this year, but bounced back to form with a decent effort behind Discovery Island last time out and could run better than his odds suggest.

We've now got a fantastic renewal of the Dubai Gold Cup to enjoy. Chances can be given to plenty, so I'll take an each-way punt on Kevin Philippart De Foy's progressive four-year-old, EL HABEEB.
Andrea Atzeni's mount rounded off his three-year-old campaign with a sixth-place finish in the St Leger - where he started slowly and couldn't recover - before a narrow Listed victory over fellow runner Giavellotto at Ascot. If he's improved for another winter on his back, then El Habeeb could challenge in this high-quality Group Two.

Al Dasim has progressed brilliantly since arriving in the UAE and George Boughey's three-year-old has a massive chance. That being said, the favouite may have met a worthy adversary in Charlie Appleby's AL SUHAIL.
William Buick's mount has bolted up twice during this Dubai World Cup Carnival, flying home from off the pace to win the Al Fahidi Fort before a dominant triumph in the lucrative Ras Al Khor. Both of those victories came over seven furlongs, but Al Suhail clearly has enough pace for this shorter distance. He'll be my sole selection.
Aidan O'Brien claimed his third victory in this race back in 2018 with Mendelssohn, who scored in the Patton Stakes before bolting up at Meydan by 18 lengths. O'Brien used the Patton Stakes as the warm-up for CAIRO, who scored comfortably at Dundalk earlier this month.
Ryan Moore's mount ended his juvenile campaign in Ireland with a powerful Group Three triumph at Leopardstown. Cairo is by a four-time Grade One winner on the dirt in America and he's been drawn perfectly in stall five.

Frankie Dettori will be desperate to ride a winner on what will likely be his final evening riding at Meydan. One of his best chances on the card could be HOPKINS, a lightly-raced five-year-old out of Bob Baffert's stable.
Hopkins has won three of his seven career starts and travels to Meydan on the back of a power-packed victory in the Paros Verdes Stakes at Santa Anita. Dettori will have been delighted when the draw placed Hopkins in stall five and there's clearly plenty more to come from this progressive sprinter.

Lord North won this race two years ago and dead-heated with Panthalassa here 12 months ago. John and Thady Gosden's seven-year-old looked as good as ever when winning the Winter Derby at Lingfield last month and Frankie Dettori's mount is a proven winner in this contest.
I'll be having a bet on Lord North. Yet, I find it hard to see why EL DRAMA sits so far adrift of the fancied runners. On his Meydan debut, Roger Varian's charge came within a neck of winning the Jebel Hatta, where only Alfareeq was good enough to pass David Egan's mount. El Drama isn't drawn as kindly this time, but 33/1 is still a crazy price considering how well he ran here last month.

EQUINOX comes into this year's Sheema Classic on the back of two outstanding performances. Tetsuya Kimura's four-year-old managed to track down Panthalassa - who had poached a huge lead turning in - to win the Tenno Sho in October. Equinox then swooped into contention around the outside of the pack in the Arima Kinen on Christmas Day, before pounding three lengths clear on the short run to the line.
Three of Europe's best middle-distance horses will line up for a crack at the favourite, along with last year's winner Shahryar. Yet, you get the feeling that it will take a huge performance to deny Equinox and I expect the favourite to put on a show this weekend.
