The Meydan World Cup Carnival draws to a close with a sensation card next Saturday. Five Grade One races will take place at Meydan, including the namesake race of the entire carnival, the Dubai World Cup.

2024 Dubai World Cup Runners

Ushba Tesoro will bid for back-to-back victories in the Dubai World Cup. Yuga Kawada's mount relished the red-hot pace set by countryman Panthalassa 12 months ago, surging down the outside to beat Algiers and Emblem Road by three lengths.

Noboru Takagi's star wasn't as effective behind a slower pace when fifth in the Breeders' Cup Classic and only just got up in time to beat Wilson Tesoro in the Tokyo Daishoten. Ushba Tesoro performed much better in the Saudi Cup, where he was nabbed on the line by Senor Buscador, but a muddling pace wouldn't particularly suit this strong-staying seven-year-old.

Dirt races are particularly hard to pick apart when there's no obvious front-runner in the field and I can't find a clear pacemaker in Saturday's field.

Senor Buscador brings some of the strongest form to the table, having won the Saudi Cup after a runner-up finish in the Pegasus World Cup. Todd Fincher's closer needs someone like National Treasure making the pace to be seen to best effect, and the extra 220 yards always seems to catch out Senor Buscador when he steps up from nine to ten furlongs.

Frankie Dettori rides Newgate, who won a weak Grade One at Santa Anita last time out. The hugely progressive Kabirkhan has plenty of course form in the book, but he too comes into this on the back of a runaway victory in a Grade One where he faced horses rated in the mid-to-high 100s. This is a much tougher spot for both.

Crupi, like Senor Buscador, needs a hot early pace to be at his best and I'm not sure whether he's up to this sort of standard. Wilson Tesoro has an each-way squeak at best. Dura Erede is the weakest of the Japanese challengers and it's hard to make a case for anyone below them in the market.

2024 Dubai World Cup Tip 1 - Derma Sotogake

Of the two Japanese stars at the head of the betting, I think I'm safe in saying that DERMA SOTOGAKE (5/1) is the quicker. Hidetaka Otonashi's four-year-old finished three lengths ahead of Ushba Tesoro in the Breeders' Cup Classic, losing out narrowly to White Abarrio, having shown a nice turn-of-foot in the closing stages.

Derma Sotogake suffered an injury in his box on the way to Riyadh for the Saudi Cup. Christophe-Patrice Lemaire clearly wanted to be close to the pace but could never quite get there, and Derma Sotogake finished a one-paced fifth as Senor Buscador and Ushba Tesoro kept on to fight out the finish.

A slower early gallop will suit Derma Sotogake, who certainly possesses a decent finishing kick. There's also a chance that Lemaire will take the race by the scruff of the neck and try to win it from the front - tactics that paid off massively when Derma Sotogake won last year's UAE Derby by six easy lengths.

2024 Dubai World Cup Tip 2 - Laurel River

Another horse who interests me is LAUREL RIVER (16/1), but I'll hold off on backing Bhupat Seemar's recruit until the day of the race, as I expect you could back him at the same, if not a bigger price on the day of the race.

Once a highly touted prospect for Bob Baffert, Seemar's recruit returned from an 18-month lay-off with a limp effort in a six-furlong sprint at Meydan in January. I really fancied Laurel River when he was upped to a mile in the Burj Nahaar and Tadgh O'Shea's mount simply blitzed that Grade Three field, opening up a lengthy lead around the final bend before winning by seven lengths eased down.

This will be the longest trip that Laurel River has ever been tried over, so backing him is a risk. However, his dam is a half-sister to a Grade One winner over ten furlongs and a gelding who placed behind Justify in a Belmont Stakes. Sire, Into Mischief is known more for speed than stamina, but if this race is run at a fairly sedate pace, it would be easier for Laurel River to see out this distance. He's a lively each-way contender.
