The opening day of action at York's Ebor Festival is headlined by the Juddmonte International Stakes. This Group One may be the youngest of the big races at York, having only been created in 1972, but the International Stakes already boasts a rich history, having been won by legends like Dahlia, Sea The Stars and Frankel.

Following St Mark's Basilica's withdrawal, Mishriff has been installed as the bookies' favourite. John Gosden's star is a three-time Group One winner on International soil, but he's yet to produce his best in Britain and travels to York on the back of defeats in the Coral-Eclipse and the King George.

Love has tasted victory at this meeting before, having won the Yorkshire Oaks in imperious fashion 12 months ago. Aidan O'Brien's filly couldn't make it five races unbeaten in the King George, finishing three lengths behind Adayar and a couple adrift of Mishriff back in third.

Alcohol Free steps up beyond the mile for the first time, as she looks to land a third Group One of the season. Mohaafeth makes his bow at the highest level, despite a surprise defeat in the York Stakes on his most recent appearance.

Alenquer travels to York on the back of a decent third in the Grand Prix de Paris. Although William Haggas' charge did beat Adayar when they met on good ground at Sandown, the general consensus is that Alenquer would prefer softer ground, especially over this sharper, ten-furlong trip.

Mac Swiney would also prefer plenty more cut in the ground, and he's yet to really prove he stays further than a mile. Juan Elcano rounds off the field, but it would be a shock if he were to challenge the big guns at the top of the market.

You can't blame the red-hot Andrew Balding for rolling the dice and throwing Alcohol Free into this contest. Many had reservations whether she would truly stay a mile prior to Royal Ascot. Although she has silenced those doubters, and emphatically, ten furlongs could be a bridge too far for this speedy filly.

While Love is greatly respected and Mohaafeth could be a player at the Ebor Festival, I think this year's Juddmonte International provides MISHRIFF with an ideal opportunity to claim his first Group One win in Britain.

Although he succumbed to defeat at Sandown and Ascot, John Gosden will have been pleased with Mishriff's efforts. In the Coral-Eclipse, David Egan's mount ran well until he ran out of steam in the closing stages. With two furlongs to travel in the King George, it looked like Mishriff might wrestle the lead from Adayar, until the Derby winner's stamina came to the fore.

Mishriff was two lengths clear of Love as they crossed the line at Ascot and this drop in trip will suit Gosden's colt more than O'Brien's filly. Love and Alenquer are likely to go forward early, and David Egan will look to pounce entering the final two furlongs.

Verdict

3.35 York (Race 4) - BOG

Returning to ten furlongs is a big plus for Mishriff, and I expect John Gosden's star will be a little too strong for his rivals in the closing stages of this year's International.
