One of the most important Group One races staged in Britain is the Coral-Eclipse Stakes. This Group One, which was first staged in 1886, provides three-year-olds with their first opportunity to take on older horses at the highest level, and this year's renewal is shaping up to be the race of the season so far.

We've taken a look through the field set to contest the 2022 Coral-Eclipse Stakes and picked out our best betting tips.

2022 Coral-Eclipse Stakes Entries

Three-year-olds get ten pounds from their older weights in the Coral-Eclipse, so it's no surprise to see two Classic winners topping the market. Vadeni was supplemented into this historic race by Jean-Claude Rouget following his Prix du Jockey Club victory. Christophe Soumillion's mount leapfrogged Charlie Appleby's Irish 2000 Guineas winner, Native Trail in the betting once his entry was confirmed.

Bay Bridge is the highest-placed of the older horses in the market, after a solid run in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes. Vadeni and Native Trail could also square off against John Gosden's multiple Group One winner Mishriff  - who'll be ridden by David Egan - and former Royal Ascot winner Lord North, who'll be partnered by James Doyle.

William Haggas will be represented by recent Tattersalls Gold Cup winner, Alenquer and possibly Dubai Honour, who also feature in Coral's betting.

2022 Coral-Eclipse Stakes Tips

Despite the healthy weight allowance both will receive on Saturday, I'm going to take the market leaders on. I feel that both have questions to answer.

The way Vadeni put the Prix du Jockey Club to bed was impressive. He was, however, placed perfectly in stall two to attack the front-running El Bodegon, drawn on the rail in one. No runners made any inroads from off the pace and the beaten favourite, Modern Games was forced to expend plenty of energy early in the race to find a prominent position from stall 13. Vadeni has never travelled outside of France before and Saturday's going will be quicker than ideal.

I'm a little worried about quick ground for Native Trail too, who's high knee-action seems to have become more pronounced as a three-year-old. The form of his Irish Derby victory doesn't seem particularly strong and Charlie Appleby's charge isn't bred to take naturally to this ten-furlong trip.

The stage could be set for one of the older horses to teach the three-year-olds a lesson. Bay Bridge and Mishriff are greatly respected. That being said, I feel that ALENQUER has plenty going for him, besides the tempting 7/1 price.

Alenquer boasts valuable course-and-distance form, having beaten future Derby and King George winner, Adayar in the Classic Trial here at Sandown last season. William Haggas' star returned to action in February with an impressive win over Lord North at Lingfield and went on to run a cracker in the Sheema Classic, where he was only beaten a length-and-a-half back in sixth.

Haggas then took his chance, thrusting Alenquer into the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh. Ryan Moore gave High Definition an enterprising, front-running ride that day and looked to have pinched an unlikely victory, only for Tom Marquand's mount to get up in the closing stages and run down the long-time leader.

The form of that Group One was boosted at Royal Ascot, with the third-placed State Of Rest and sixth-place Broome winning the Prince Of Wales's Stakes and Hardwicke Stakes respectively. Alenquer is extremely versatile in terms of trip, tactics and ground and I feel he's been a little overlooked in this market.

Verdict

I'm prepared to take the three-year-olds on in Saturday's Coral-Eclipse Stakes and Alenquer has every chance of claiming his second Group One win. 7/1 is an excellent each-way price.
