Coronation Cup Preview

The Coronation Cup has been an integral part of the Epsom Derby Festival for well over a century, serving as the perfect warm-up act for the Oaks on the first day of the famous meeting. After the 2020 Derby meeting was postponed amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, organisers decided to switch the Coronation Cup to Newmarket, making it the headline race on Friday’s newly formed card.

Leading the way in the current betting we find Ghaiyyath, who’s tended to blow hot and cold throughout his career. Ghaiyyath’s stunning triumph in last year’s Preiss Von Baden is a prime example of the devastating power he can produce on his day. There have, however, been times where Appleby’s charge has flopped when faced with true Group One quality opponents. Last year, Ghaiyyath could only finish third when starting as the odds-on favourite in the Prix Ganay, and William Buick’s mount quickly faded from the front before trailing home tenth in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

Coronation Cup Form Guide

Just when Kew Gardens seemed to have the race sewn up 12 months ago, Defoe sprung from the pack to chase down Aidan O’Brien’s raider and hand Roger Varian a second Coronation Cup win. Another victory followed in the Hardwicke Stakes, before Defoe was vastly outclassed behind Enable in the King George. Varian’s star ran well in defeat to Loxley out in Meydan back in March and Andrea Atzeni’s mount is a previous course-and-distance winner, having bolted up in the 2018 Jockey Club Stakes.

Aidan O’Brien has won over half of the last 15 editions of the Coronation Cup, and he’s sent two of his top middle-distance horses to Newmarket this weekend. Anthony Van Dyck initially struggled after his Derby-winning exploits, but did manage to register a couple of solid placed efforts in the Irish Champion Stakes and in the Breeders’ Cup Turf. Broome ran on well for fourth behind his stablemate at Epsom, but hasn’t been seen since labouring home sixth in that debacle of an Irish Derby last June.

The fly in the ointment could be Stradivarius, who’s fantastic winning run was ended by Kew Gardens on his final start of 2019 in the Long Distance Cup. John Gosden’s all-conquering stayer hasn’t run over a trip this short since May 2017, but there is a history of two-milers doing well in the Coronation Cup, and he certainly has the class to cope with this sort of test.

David Simcock’s stalwart, Desert Encounter features in the final field, but I can’t see this hardy eight-year-old having too much of a say. Alounak will be having his first start for Andre Balding in Friday’s main event, but he too will likely struggle to keep up with the pace.

Coronation Cup Tips

He may sit someway clear of his rivals in the ratings, but I’m prepared to take on the inconsistent Ghaiyyath. Defoe too seems a little overpriced, despite his excellent victory in this race 12 months ago.

The mile-and-a-half course at Epsom has favoured front runners in the past, and I’d be surprised if Frankie Dettori and Stradivarius didn’t join Ghaiyyath at the head of affairs and make this a real test of stamina. I, however, feel the Aidan O’Brien’s record in this race cannot be ignored, and the best betting prospect could be ANTHONY VAN DYCK.

All of Anthony Van Dyck’s career victories have come during the first half of the season. In 2019, O’Brien’s charge cruised to victory on his reappearance at Lingfield, before picking up in stylish fashion to secure victory in the Epsom Derby. Results went by the waste side thereafter, but there were flashes of real quality. Most notably in the Breeders’ Cup Turf, where Ryan Moore ran into traffic problems two from home, but still managed to stay on and cross the line a not-so-distant third.

Verdict

Anthony Van Dyck may not have won since last year’s Derby, but he did place in some high-profile races last autumn and the fact Aidan O’Brien has kept him in training at four suggests he feels this son of Galileo has more to offer.

At 15/2, he holds the most appeal in Friday’s Coronation Cup.
