2023 Epsom Derby Jockey Prize Money
In the world of horse racing, jockeys earn a percentage of the first prize money if they guide their horse to victory. That percentage will have been agreed upon before the race started.
In British National Hunt racing, a jockey will generally receive around 8% of the winning prize money and 4% of the place money. Given that the first prize for the Epsom Derby is £880k, then the winning jockey could pocket around £70,000.
Epsom Derby Race Information
Named in honour of the party host, 12th Earl of Derby, the race was first run at Epsom Downs racecourse in 1780. The Derby is only open to three-year-old colts and fillies. Geldings cannot run in the Derby. Fillies can take on the colts, but they're more likely to run in the Epsom Oaks, which is the filly's version of the Derby.
The Derby idea inspired the likes of the Kentucky Derby, the Irish Derby and the French Derby, known as the Prix du Jockey Club.
In the latter half of the 20th century, Derby Day became more and more popular with the working class. The Derby was then moved to a Saturday, in order to appeal to it's new demographic.
