There was barely a cloud in the sky above Epsom Downs as the runners limbered up ahead of a wide-open Epsom Derby.

Following his heroics on the Downs on Friday, Frankie Dettori's mount Arrest had been backed into Derby favouritism overnight. After a brief drift this morning, Arrest settled at the top of the market, alongside Charlie Appleby's Military Order and ante-post favourite, Auguste Rodin.

Sir Michael Stoute's runner Passenger was fairly weak in the Derby betting before the off. Money came for the top two from last month's Dante, The Foxes and White Birch. Sprewell was solid at 12/1, with Ralph Beckett's Artistic Star and Aidan O'Brien's second string, San Antonio coming in for each-way support.

Oisin Murphy endured another difficult start, as The Foxes stumbled coming out of the stalls. Frankie Dettori pushed Arrest into an early lead alongside Adelaide River. White Birch and Waipiro waited at the rear alongside The Foxes.

After two furlongs, San Antonio was bustled up to lead. He was soon joined by Adelaide River and the two Ballydoyle outsiders settled down to set some steady fractions. Arrest was caught on the outside of the pack at the top of Tattenham corner, with Military Order also a little wider than ideal.

On the descent for home, the two Ballydoyle pacemakers gave way and it was Roger Varian's outsider, King Of Steel who burst into a two-length lead. Ryan Moore was the quickest to react, pushing Auguste Rodin into contention and King Of Steel was powerless to deny the joint-favourite, who ran out an impressive winner.

King Of Steel finished a clear second - a huge effort on just his first start of the season. White Birch made up plenty of late ground to finish fourth ahead of Sprewell, who endured a luckless passage through the race.

The Foxes ran on well to place fifth, leaving Oisin Murphy wondering what might have been had he not stumbled at the start. Frankie Dettori and Arrest were well-beaten in the end, as were William Buick and Military Order.
