Poule d'Essai des Poulains Betting Tips

Flat racing fans are in for a real treat on Monday afternoon, as Deauville stages the opening Classics of the 2020 season. Sadly, the gates of the racecourse remain closed to the general public, to try and stem the spread of Covid-19.

Thankfully, both Classics will be streamed live, allowing punters to witness which three-year-old will establish themselves as the best miler in their respective divisions.

The Poule d’Essai des Poulains, the French equivalent of the 2000 Guineas, is joined by the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches, the French 1000 Guineas.

Andre Fabre intends to target the rescheduled running of that fabled Classic with emphatic Criterium International winner Alson, leaving Victor Ludorum as Godolphin’s leading light in the Poulains.

French 2000 Runners & Form

Despite many firms taking bets on Victor Ludorum continuing his unbeaten two-year-old form throughout 2020, Fabre watched his talented charge fall to a shock defeat on his reappearance in the Prix Fountainebleau.

Drawn widest of the eight runners, the 2/5 favourite looked keen on his seasonal bow. 241/10 outsider, The Summit made the running along the inside rail, stealing a march on his rivals coming out of the crucial final bend. Victor Ludorum couldn’t find the finishing burst to bridge the gap between himself and The Summit, who ran out a convincing winner, with Ecrivain coming through late on to relegate the favourite back to third.

Helter Skelter went into the Prix Fountainebleau as Victor Ludorum’s closest challenger in the market. Held up out the back for most of the race, Cristian Demuro asked his mount for an effort as the field straightened for home. Try as he might, Helter Skelter failed to make any inroads, and it’s hard to see how this hold-up horse could reverse the form with the three ahead of him in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains betting.

Kenway stayed on from the rear to finish just a short-head behind Victor Ludorum in that Group Three. An impressive winner of the seven-furlong Prix la Rochette as a two-year-old, Kenway has suffered four comfortable defeats when stepped up to a mile, and I doubt that winless run will come to an end in Grade One company.

Arapaho could join stablemate Victor Ludorum in Monday’s Classic, having earned his spot in the field with a decent Listed triumph earlier in May. Just two of the previous ten winners of the Poulains came into the race without any prior experience over the trip, though, a fact which has to count against Arapaho.

The likes of Reshabar and Celestin shouldn’t be discounted too quickly. The longest price of any of the last seven winners, however, is just 5/1, so I think it would be sensible to look towards the top end of the betting to find my Poule d’Essai des Poulains tips.

French 2000 Guineas Tips

It would be a huge shock if Victor Ludorum didn’t come on a significant amount for his reappearance in the Prix Fountainebleau. A wide draw hindered his prospects from the get-go, and the way the favourite finished that race suggested he was in need of the run.

Six of the last ten French 2000 Guineas winners have previously run in the Prix Fountainebleau and few would question the assumption that Victor Ludorum is the most talented of this modest-looking bunch. However, THE SUMMIT was more than a match for his rival earlier this month and I think it could pay to side with Henri-Alex Pantall’s charge, especially while he sits at such an appealing each-way price.

The Summit rounded off his two-year-old campaign with two defeats in races further than a mile, where he simply couldn’t muster any finishing pace. A narrow defeat to Pisanello on his return in the Prix Omnium II saw The Summit carry an astronomical price into the Prix Fountainebleu. Although he was able to make the most of a very kind draw in stall one, there was nothing fluky about his victory. In-fact, the time The Summit registered stacks up favourably with those recorded by previous winners on similarly soft ground - something made even more impressive when you consider he made every inch of the running.

Pantall will be praying for another favourable draw. If not stall one, then any of the first four gates, as an inside draw can be a huge advantage.

If Pierre-Charles Boudot can get his fractions spot-on once again, then I see no reason why The Summit cannot defeat Victor Ludorum and secure Poule d’Essai des Poulains on Monday.

He’s the best of my French 2000 Guineas tips on a juicy each-way price of 7/1.
