We bring you our latest French racing tips, as Chantilly racecourse stages the Prix de Diane and Prix du Jockey Club on Sunday 5th July.

The day after Epsom stages the Derby and the Oaks, Chantilly hosts the French equivalent of those fabled Classics.

Run over a shorter trip than the races at Epsom, the Prix de Diane and Prix du Jockey Club both boast an illustrious roll of honour, with the best colts and fillies in the history of European flat racing featuring on the honour’s boards at this historic venue.

The betting markets for both of these Classic races is already starting to hot up. Let’s take a closer look at the Prix de Diane and Prix du Jockey Club, and come up with some selections!

Alpine Star jumped to the head of the Prix de Diane betting, following her superb victory in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. Jessica Harrington’s filly bounded clear in impressive fashion that day, displaying plenty of poise, talent and an abundance of speed. I didn’t, however, get the feeling she would improve for the step up in trip, and would rather side with one with more stamina in their breeding.

Peaceful ran away with the Irish 1000 Guineas on her last start and Aidan O’Brien sends his Classic winner to Chantilly, instead of an outing in the Oaks. Like Alpine Star, she hit the line really hard that day at the Curragh, and I fear this extended distance, on what will likely be softish ground, may dampen her turn-of-foot.

25 of the last 30 winners of the Prix de Diane were based in France, so backing one of the home entrants is a sensible plan. Raabihah looks an excellent prospect for the red-hot Jean-Claude Rouget, but she’s only been tested at Listed level so far – and I use the word tested loosely, as she faced little in the way of competition that day – and will have to prove she’s up to Group One standard.

Miss Extra earned her spot in the Diane with a good victory in the Prix de Sandringham last month. While she holds appeal, I'm more tempted with an each-way punt on SPEAK OF THE DEVIL.

Following a comfortable defeat on her reappearance, few fancied Francois Chappet's filly to pull up any trees in the French 1000 Guineas last month. It was surprising, then, to see Speak Of The Devil come flying home from off the pace to push Dream And Do all the way to the line.

Cristian Demuro's mount went down by a nose in the end, but it was still an excellent performance in a top-level race. Speak Of The Devil is bred to improve greatly as she steps up in trip, and the winning experience she gained around a tight, turning track in Deauville on debut will stand her in good stead. 11/1 looks a great each-way price.

John Gosden’s Mishriff and Aidan O’Brien’s Armory will fly the flag for the British and Irish raiders in the French Derby. Only two trainers from across the Channel have managed to win the Prix du Jockey Club since the turn of the millennium, though, and neither holds too much in the way of appeal.

Pao Alto made a big statement when winning the Prix la Force on his reappearance and has to be massively respected. That being said, Christophe Ferland had been planning on getting another run into his stable star before travelling to Chantilly, and that hasn’t materialised, suggesting he didn’t come out of his reappearance all that well.

While Ocean Atlantique is a well-bred colt who brings winning form into the race, I’m struggling to get away from VICTOR LUDORUM at the head of the market. Even at 9/4, he holds a great deal of appeal.

After a limp reappearance where he was clearly in need of a run, Andre Fabre’s star stamped his authority on the French 2000 Guineas. Expertly held up by Mikael Barzalona, Victor Ludorum made steady headway along the stand’s rail during the final quarter of the race, and was still going away from his rivals as he crossed the line a near two-length winner.

While you would usually associate Shamardal’s progeny with eight-furlong speed, he’s produced many horses who have enjoyed the step up over a mile and there’s stamina in the dam’s side of Victor Ludorum’s breeding. Fabre’s charge looked a class above his rivals when winning the first colt’s Classic of the season, and we could see a similarly impressive performance from Victor Ludorum this weekend.

French horses have a dominant record in the Prix de Diane, so I think it's worth taking the European runners on with French 1000 Guineas runner-up, Speak Of The Devil at an each-way price.

Victor Ludorum looks an excellent bet at 9/4 in the Prix du Jockey Club, and I feel Andre' Fabre's Classic winner will be too classy for his rivals once again.
