Leading the way in the betting we find Charlie Appleby’s Pinatubo, who returned to top form in the Prix Jean Prat last time out. Having placed in both the 2000 Guineas and the St James’s Palace Stakes, last year’s top juvenile appreciated the drop back to seven furlongs last time out, quickening clear of Lope Y Fernandez to score a comfortable victory.

Circus Maximus edged out Romanised to win this race 12 months ago. Having returned to action with a third Group One win in the Queen Anne Stakes, Aidan O’Brien’s charge went down fighting in the Sussex Stakes, before looking very one-paced as Palace Pier dominated the Jacques le Marois on heavy ground.

Ken Condon’s former Classic winner cruised to victory in the seven-furlong Minstrel Stakes on his reappearance. Romanised also laboured on bottomless ground last time out in the Prix Jacques le Marois, and connections will be delighted to see the word “good” feature in the going description for Sunday.

Siskin’s unbeaten career record came to an end in the Sussex Stakes last time out. Ger Lyon’s star made his move two from home, and looked the most likely winner at the furlong pole. Sadly, the Irish 2000 Guineas winner couldn’t get past Circus Maximus, and both were passed by Mohaather in the strides before the line.

Two Andre Fabre-horses round off the betting, the first of those behind Persian King. Despite the heavy ground seemingly going in his favour, Pierre-Charles Boudot’s mount had no answer to Palace Pier in the Prix Jacques le Marois, eventually finishing a well-beaten fourth. Persian King was very impressive when winning the Prix d’Ispahan over nine furlongs on his penultimate start, but I don’t think a mile suits him as well as trips around a mile-and-a-quarter.

French 2000 Guineas winner, Victor Ludorum rounds off the field. After winning that Classic without breaking a sweat, Victor Ludorum has finished third behind Mishriff in both the Prix du Jockey Club and at Deauville over ten furlongs. Mickael Barzalona’s mount was very keen in both of those races, and didn’t seem to see out a mile-and-a-quarter. Conditions on Sunday are much more suitable.

Pinatubo may hold the betting in a strangle-hold, but I think it’s worth taking the hot-favourite on.

Although he ran well to place in two Group Ones over a mile earlier in the season, Appleby’s star clearly wasn’t as effective over that trip as he is over seven furlongs. I'm not sure he stays a mile, and Circus Maximus is sure to make this a strong test of stamina.

Persian King - another proven stayer - could go forward with Circus Maximus after drawing stall one. Siskin will position himself behind the leaders and look to utilise his devastating turn of foot in the final furlong.

Romanised will look to come from off the pace and strike late in the day. As will VICTOR LUDORUM, and I think the market back-marker is the most appealing prospect at his current price.

Andre Fabre’s star had genuine excuses on his last two starts. In the Prix du Jockey Club, a sluggish start gave Mikael Barzalona far too much work to do, and those efforts proved costly in the closing stages. Victor Ludorum was very keen last time out, but still travelled into the race powerfully, only to find little in the closing stages on what was very heavy ground.

On his last start over a mile, Fabre’s star brushed his rivals aside with a dominant display in the French 2000 Guineas. Victor Ludorum bided his time at the rear that day, before sweeping past the entire field to beat The Summit by almost two lengths.

There looks to be plenty of pace on here, and Barzalona should be able to slot in at the rear from stall six. As Pinatubo and Siskin try their hardest to get by Circus Maximus, I could see Victor Ludorum sidling into contention again, and he could swamp the lot of them on the run to the line.

Verdict

This is somewhat of a risky selection, considering the quality of the field he's up against, but I really feel Victor Ludorum will be suited by the conditions and style of Sunday's feature. At 9/1, he's been massively overlooked.
