We take a look at the two Group Ones taking place in France on Sunday and provide readers with our Prix Morny tips and Prix Jean Romanet tips.

On Sunday, Deauville is the centre of attention again, and flat racing fans will be treated to two historic Group One races. The six-furlong Prix Morny will provide some pointers towards next season’s Classics, while the Prix Jean Romanet provides older fillies and mares the chance to claim top-level honours over ten furlongs.

We’ll now take a look through the betting for both of these excellent races and come up with some selections.

The ground is going to play a very important factor at Deauville this weekend. None of the juveniles in the Prix Morny has ever run on anything worse than good-to-soft, so heavy ground is completely untested water for them all.

Campanelle was hugely impressive when winning the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot, especially when you consider she was drawn unfavourably up in stall one. Wesley Ward has won the Morny twice with top-quality horses, but the ground was good on both occasions, and this filly will be making her first start over six furlongs on speed-sapping ground.

My preference, then, is for the Queen’s runner, TACTICAL. Like his market rival, Tactical scored at Royal Ascot, powering clear of a decent field in the Windsor Castle Stakes. Andrew Balding’s charge then backed that performance up over six furlongs at the July Festival, seeing out the trip well to win the July Stakes by almost two lengths.

Rain was falling heavily that day, but it didn’t bother Tactical, who surged clear late on in convincing style. There are pointers in his breeding that suggest he won’t be inconvenienced by the going, and I think Tactical is an excellent bet at 3/1.

Nazeef comfortably heads the betting here, and will be a banker for many. I, however, have some concerns.

The Falmouth Stakes winner may have made eye-catching late progress to finish third on her first start over this trip in the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood. The ground was favourably quick that day, and Nazeef was still beaten three lengths. Plus, many of the horses she passed late on had already given up the ghost.

I’m never convinced that John Gosden’s horses want testing ground, and Nazeef’s stamina will come under serious scrutiny on this sort of going.  While she’s clearly the best horse in this race, I think it could pay to take Nazeef on, and the one who holds most appeal is AMBITION.

Considering she’s a Dubawi filly out of Ralph Beckett’s Epsom Oaks winner, Talent, it’s taken Ambition much longer than expected to reach her peak. Xavier Thomas-Demeaulte’s charge raced just once at two, and struggled on her first couple of starts last season. There were signs of progression in the autumn, though, as Ambition hacked up in a 12-furlong maiden on very soft ground, before cruising to Group Three glory on similarly heavy going.

On her only start of 2020 so far, Ambition produced the finest performance of her career thus far. Grand Glory – who had beaten Romanciere, Bolleville and Dariyma previously – was pushed into odds-on to win the 11-furlong Prix Corrida. Just when it seemed the favourite had seen off her rivals, Ambition swooped into contention from off the pace under Mickael Barzalona, and won fairly cosily in the end.

There’s no doubting Ambition is bred to succeed at the highest level, and she seems to be on a steep upward curve of progression. Ground conditions will be ideal for this strong stayer and, at 12/1, she offers plenty of each-way value.

Verdict

Tactical brings the best form into this race, and there's plenty of reason to think he will handle the ground. Pierre Charles-Boudout's mount is my pick in the Prix Morny.

On heavy ground, over this trip, Nazeef looks getable to me in the Prix Jean Romanet, and there's plenty to like about Ambition at an appealing each-way price.
