Some would say that Stradivarius meteoric rise to the head of the staying ranks started here at Glorious Goodwood in 2017. Fresh off a sparkling victory in the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot, John Gosden’s star claimed his first Group One title in the Goodwood Cup, beating favourite Big Orange in excellent fashion.

Two more Goodwood Cups and three Royal Ascot Gold Cups later, Stradivarius will return to Sussex and attempt to become the first horse to win this Group One for the fourth time in a row. The bookmakers were taking no chances when the entries were revealed, instantly installing Stradivarius as the 8/13 favourite.

Goodwood Cup Form Guide

Stradivarius main opposition will come in the form of Santiago. Aidan O’Brien’s colt followed in the favourite’s footsteps by winning the Queen’s Vase at Ascot this year. Santiago then claimed Classic glory in the Irish Derby, and will take in the Goodwood Cup before targeting the St Leger.

Nayef Road produced a career-best performance to finish second in the 2020 Ascot Gold Cup, but still has a whopping ten lengths to find on Stradivarius.

Spanish Mission will make his second start over two miles, having gone down narrowly to Dashing Willoughby in the Henry VII Stakes at Sandown.

Tom Marquand has already been jocked up on Who Dares Wins, as Alan King throws his talented eight-year-old into Group One company for the first time on British soil.

Eagles By Day will also jump up to the highest level for the first time, following that impressive triumph in the Silver Cup Stakes at York.

The field for the feature race on day one of Glorious Goodwood is rounded off by Euchen Glen, who hasn’t won since landing the John Smith’s Cup at York in 2018.

Although Santiago will be getting a stone from his elders at the weights, I'd still be very shocked if Stradivarius were to lose. His performance in the Ascot Gold Cup was the outstanding moment of the season so far, and John Gosden's star should win this race for the fourth year in a row.

As there are two paid places still available, and there's a chance Santiago might not see out the trip, NAYEF ROAD at 22/1 makes a lot of sense. Mark Johnston's charge followed Stradivarius home at Ascot. He's won here at Goodwood in the past and will have no trouble seeing out the trip. Stradivarius should win, but Nayef Road is the best each-way option.

Although I'm expecting Stradivarius to win, the value bet here has to be Nayef Road, who has course form in the bag and is proven over this distance. 22/1 is a massive each-way price.
