We take a look at the Stewards’ Cup odds and some key trends for the races, before picking out two Stewards’ Cup tips on the final day of Glorious Goodwood.

The final day of action at Glorious Goodwood is headlined by the Stewards’ Cup. This six-furlong handicap is one of the biggest betting races of the entire flat-racing season. 28 high-quality sprinters will enter the stalls ahead of the Stewards’ Cup, and only one will join greats like Lochsong, Danetime and Borderlescott on the illustrious roll of honour.

2020 Stewards’ Cup Trends

Trying to pick out a winner in a tightly-contested 28-horse handicap sprint can seem quite daunting. There are, however, a few recurring trends which could help us find the needle in the Glorious Goodwood haystack.

  • All of the last 15 winners had previously won over six furlongs
  • 14 of the last 15 winners had won at least three times during their career
  • 14 of the last 15 winners had run at least three times that season
  • 14 of last 15 winners had run in a pattern race (Group or Listed) or a Class Two Handicap last time out
  • 12 of the last 15 winners were five-years-old or younger
  • 12 of the last 15 winners carried a weight of 8-12 or more
  • 11 of the last 15 winners had an SP of 14/1 or shorter
  • 11 of the last 15 winners were drawn in stall 10 or wider
  • 9 of last 15 winners had won or placed last time out

Although there is some pace drawn in the lower stalls, most notably from Meraas and Atalanta’s Boy in stalls four and five, a high gate is the place to be. There looks to be tons of pace drawn between stalls 16 and 24, so I think the trend of horses drawn high will more than likely continue in 2020.

Taking everything into account, NAHAARR looks a very solid favourite. William Haggas’ four-year-old looked the most likely winner with a furlong to travel in the Silver Wokingham, only to get run down by Chiefofchiefs and Burmese Waltz in the final 100 yards. Nahaarr made up for that defeat in excellent fashion at Newbury last time out, powering clear of Watan to score in impressive fashion.

Tom Marquand’s mount is up seven pounds in the weights for that victory, but it doesn’t seem an insurmountable mark. Nahaar has been drawn perfectly, right in the middle of the pace block in stall 19 and could become the fourth favourite to win the Stewards’ Cup in the last six years.

As the field is so large, I’m going to take a second stab at finding some profit. We’ve seen three three-year-olds triumph here in the last five years, and Scottish Stewards’ Cup winner, Meraas ticks plenty of boxes. I, however, would rather take a punt on Richard Hannon’s youngster, LEXINGTON DASH.

Having bolted up on his fourth start in novice company, Lexington Dash showed three highly-rated rivals a clean set of heels to win on his handicap debut at Newmarket – despite being shuffled back to last three furlongs out. Hannon’s charge was then met with more traffic problems in the bet365 Handicap last time out, and was still a long way back at the two-pole, but ran on gamely late on to finish fourth.

Quicker ground will certainly suit this son of Siyouni, as he’s shown he has a really smart turn of foot when asked for an effort. Thore Hammer Hansen has really upped his game this season, and takes a valuable three-pounds off Lexington Dash’s back. He’ll be the last of my Stewards’ Cup tips.

Nahaarr seems to have everything going for him in this year's Stewards' Cup, and still warrants backing at 7/2.

Of those sitting at each-way prices, I really like the chances of Lexington Dash, who offers plenty of value at 12/1.
