We take a look through the betting for the feature on day three of Glorious Goodwood and provide readers with our 2020 Sussex Stakes tips for Wednesday 29th July.

The second day of action at Glorious Goodwood is headlined by the thrilling Sussex Stakes. This Group One run over a mile is one of the most important races on the flat racing calendar. Not only does the Sussex Stakes bring together Classic winners from all across Europe, but it allows older miler the first chance to test the mettle of that year’s crop of three-year-old.

Leading the way in the betting we find Ger Lyon’s Siskin, who produced a superb performance to win the Irish 2000 Guineas on his reappearance.

I was firmly against Siskin that day, fearing he wouldn’t see out the mile. The favourite received a bit of luck, as Lope Y Fernandez swerved across his path and opened up the perfect gap, but Siskin still had to get the job done, and Lyon’s stable star quickened away from his rivals in devastating fashion.

2020 Sussex Stakes Form Guide

Viewers will get to see which Guineas winner is the strongest at Goodwood too, as British Classic hero Kameko has been thrown into the mix. Andrew Balding and connections are convinced their star didn't see out the trip when fourth in the Derby, and Kameko drops back to the distance he excelled over when winning the 2000 Guineas.

Mohaather was one of the hard-luck stories of Royal Ascot, cruising home fifth behind a wall of runners in the Queen Anne Stakes. Marcus Tregoning’s lightly-raced four-year-old then produced one of the performances of the season so far – according to RPR ratings at least – to win the Summer Mile at Ascot, and he travels to Goodwood as Siskin’s main competitor.

Circus Maximus went down to Too Darn Hot by just half-a-length in this race 12 months ago. Aidan O’Brien’s charge returns to Goodwood on the back of a hard-fought Queen Anne Stakes success at Royal Ascot, and this hardy front-runner remains one of the toughest horses in the division.

Wichita could joined stablemate Circus Maximus in the field, having run well to place in both the 2000 Guineas and the St James’s Palace Stakes.

Nazeef got the better of Terebellum when the two clashed in the Falmouth Stakes during the July Festival. John Gosden has handed both an entry, and they could relish the chance to take on the colts in the Sussex Stakes.

Other notable entrants include Molatham, who drifted markedly before the Prix Jean Prat and still managed to finish fifth. Andre Fabre also discussed the possibility of Earthlight stepping up in trip and entering the Sussex Stakes, but the jury is still out on whether that move will materialise.

Duke Of Hazzard won two pattern races around Goodwood last season, and could make his second Group One appearance of the season. Al Suhail could also jump up to top-level company, having bolted up at the July Festival.

In the last 15 editions of the Sussex Stakes, three-year-olds have come out on top nine times. While this may seem like the younger horses have a distinct advantage, which they do consider the weight older horses have to give them, it doesn’t paint the full picture.

Of the nine three-year-old winners, the longest priced winner was Proclamation, who was a 3/1 shot when he beat Soviet Song in 2005. Of the other eight, only Toronado didn’t go off as the favourite. The rest went off around even money or shorter. When the betting has been fairly congested older horses have tended to come out on top.

I usually like to back horses coming from off the pace in big races at Goodwood. Circus Maximus and Wichita will look to make it a stern test of stamina at the head of affairs, something which could inconvenience the very speedy Siskin. Kameko will look to pounce in the final furlong, like he did in the 2000 Guineas. Yet, the one I feel could be best suited by a quickly-run mile at Glorious Goodwood is MOHAATHER.

Despite riding three winners on the opening day of Royal Ascot, Jim Crowley was devastated that he didn’t find a clear run on this talented colt in the Queen Anne Stakes. Crowley was confident he still had loads of horse underneath him, but couldn’t find any clean air to mount an assault.

In the Summer Mile, Mohaather was in with several horses rated around the 115 mark. Yet, he made them all look like handicappers, sweeping to the front with two furlongs to travel before cruising to an effortless victory.

That was Mohaather’s first start around a turning track, and he really seemed to relish the challenge. I expect Jim Crowley will be perfectly happy sitting just off what will surely be a strong pace, and I can see Mohaather powering past the Classic winners on the run to the line.
