Wednesday's card at Glorious Goodwood is headlined by the Sussex Stakes. Many of the sport's best milers have claimed victory in this Group One and it's one of 2023's star names who currently dominates the betting for this year's renewal.

Aidan O'Brien has described Paddington's progress this season as "unusual". "Freakish" might be a more appropriate word to use, when you consider that, in just over four months, Paddington has transformed himself from a 97-rated handicapper into the highest-rated three-year-old in Europe.

There's little to be gained from backing Paddington at 1/2, but there's no doubt that Aidan O'Brien's raider is the most obvious winner of the Sussex Stakes.

The only profitable plan involves delving into the "betting without Paddington" market where Inspiral is priced up at 8/11. John and Thady Gosden's silly is capable of a massive performance on her best day, but recent defeats in the Falmouth, the QEII and Queen Anne must raise questions about Inspiral's appetite to finish off her races.

In this special market, I'm going to have a small bet on the French runner FACTEUR CHEVAL, despite recent performances suggesting a mile may be a little on the sharp side.

Jerome Reynier's charge rounded off his three-year-old campaign by beating Tribalist in a Group Three over a mile, but looked a little outpaced behind that same rival on his first couple of four-year-old starts. On his first attempt at a trip further than eight furlongs in the Prix d'Ispahan, Facteur Cheval ran a mighty race, losing out to the classy Anmaat by just a head.

A deluge of rain is forecast to hit Goodwood on Wednesday morning, which will only enhance the French raider's chances, given his winning form on heavy ground and the extra stamina he possesses. If Facteur Cheval was to follow Paddington home, I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised.
