The eyes of the sporting world were fixed on Aintree this afternoon, as 32 talented chasers took part in the 2024 Grand National.

Corach Rambler ran out a hugely impressive winner of this great race 12 months ago and Lucinda Russell's star returned to Aintree on the back of a third-place finish in the Gold Cup. During the build-up, Corach Rambler was leapfrogged in the betting by former Irish National winner I Am Maximus, for the all-conquering Paul Townend & Willie Mullins combination.

Willie Mullins' Mr Incredible was well-backed this morning, as was stablemate Meetingofthewaters. Panda Boy had been supported for Martin Brassil. John McConnell's Mahler Mission wasn't without his backers. Neither was Kitty's Light, who snuck into the reduced field for this year's Grand National right at the bottom of the weights.

There was money around for 2022 winner Noble Yeats, Gavin Cromwell's Limerick Lace and another Willie Mullins' runner, Capodanno this morning. Vanillier, Minella Indo, Delta Work and Latenightpass came in for late support before the starter sent the field on their way.

A standing start was introduced to the Grand National this year, to ensure that the runners approached the opening flight at a safer pace. At first, it seemed this initiative had worked, as there were no fallers at the opening flight, that was until Derek Fox was flung from the saddle of defending champion I Am Maximus.

Glengouly and Foxy Jacks made the early running, as Noble Yeats was badly outpaced in the early stages. Limerick Lace, who was backed into close to favouritism before the off, made two significant early errors and dropped to the rear after the fifth.

Stattler was pulled up after the canal turn. Mr Incredible and Mahler Mission unseated their riders at the start of the second circuit. With four fences to jump, 20 horses were still in with a fighting chance and Aintree braced itself for a grand stand finish.

As the front-runners gave way, Rachael Blackmore moved Minella Indo up to challenge. Jack Kennedy responded on Delta Work and the two former Grade One winners opened up a lead.

Paul Townend had given I Am Maximus a stalking ride on the inside rail throughout. Jumping the last, the joint-favourite had the leader within his sights. I Am Maximus hit the front at the elbow and turned on the afterburners, quickly putting daylight between himself and the chasing pack.

Delta Work held off Minella Indo to win the race for second, with Galvin coming home in fourth. Kitty's Light ran a mighty race to finish fifth. There was then a decent gap before Meetingofthewaters crossed the line alongside Ain't That A Shame, who was given an excellent ride by David Maxwell.

Galia Des Liteaux and Roi Mage finished inside the top ten. Limerick Lace kept on well to finish tenth, ahead of Coko Beach, Latenightpass and The Goffer. 21 of the 32 starters completed the course. Early indications are that all of the entrants returned home safely.
