We're now weeks away from the 2024 renewal of the Grand National. The final field may have been reduced to 34 runners this year, but we can still look forward to a fantastic renewal of this famous handicap come April 13th.

Before last year's Grand National, I gathered a list of key recurring ten-year trends that could help point punters in the right direction. Corach Rambler ticked off 11 of the key trends and fulfilling the all-important criteria below stood him in good stead, as Lucinda Russell's star went on to justify favourism with a comfortable victory.

Here are those key trends again, with Corach Rambler's information added, and a look at how this year's entrants performance against the trends.

2024 Grand National Key Trends

  • 11 of the last 11 winners ran in a high-profile race last time out
  • 11 of the last 11 winners had run at least 3 times that season
  • 10 of the last 11 winners were aged between 8 and 11
  • 9 of the last 11 winners had started at least 10 races over fences
  • 9 of the last 11 winners had won no more than two handicap chases
  • 9 of the last 11 winners had their last run in February or March
  • 9 of the last 11 winners were rated 146 or higher
  • 9 of the last 11 winners finished no worse than 5th last time out
  • 9 of the last 11 winners had won or placed over 3m2f or further
  • 8 of the last 11 winners carried 10-13 or less
  • 8 of the last 11 winners had won that season
  • 8 of the last 11 winners had never run over the Grand National fences before
  • 8 of the last 11 winners had won a chase over at least 3m

Missing Trends

Galia Des Liteaux 12/13 Only 9 Chase Starts
Conflated 11/13 Weight No Win That Season
I Am Maximus 11/13 Weight Only 9 Chase Starts
Eldorado Allen 11/13 No Win That Season Pulled Up LTO
Ain't That A Shame 11/13 No Run Since January Jumped National Fences Before
Latenightpass 11/13 Only 8 Chase Starts (19 P2P) Jumped National Fences Before
Adamantly Chosen 11/13 Only 7YO Low Profile Race LTO
The Goffer 11/13 Only 7YO Never Won Over 3m
Panda Boy 11/13 Only 9 Chase Starts No Win That Season

We put the top 38 entrants for the 2024 Grand National against the trends above. The majority of the runners ticked off either nine or ten of the 13 key trends. No horse managed a perfect 13 from 13, but GALIA DES LITEAUX came agonisingly close.

Dan Skelton's mare was only let down by the fact that she hasn't started 10 or more chases under rules. Neither of the last two winners of the Grand National, Noble Yeats and Corach Rambler had reached double figures in chasing appearances either, so I doubt whether Galia Des Liteaux's fans will be put off by that solitary missing trend.

Eight entrants ticked off 11 of the 13 key trends, including Tom Ellis' Latenightpass and Joe Tizzard's Eldorado Allen. Fancied runners I Am Maximus and Conflated did well too, along with Irish counterparts Ain't That A Shame, Adamantly Chosen, The Goffer and Panda Boy

2024 Grand National Trends Shirkers

Name
Score
Bronn 7/10
Mahler Mission 8/10
Janidil 8/10
Classic Getaway 8/10
Farouk D'Alene 8/10
Mr Incredible 8/10
Chemical Energy 8/10
Glengouly 8/10

The worst that any of the 38 entrants achieved was seven out of 13, a score achieved by BRONN. Willie Mullins' entrant is only seven years old and is yet to win a chase over three miles. Poor seasonal form and a lack of experience also counted against the top trends shirker.

Seven horses ticked off just eight of the 13 key trends, including the fancied Mahler Mission, who performed surprisingly poorly. Willie Mullins' quartet of Janidil, Classic Getaway, Mr Incredible and Glengouly only matched Mahler Mission's score of eight, as did Gordon Elliott's duo of Farouk D'alene and Chemical Energy.

Verdict

Galiea Des Liteaux was the top trendsetter for the 2024 Grand National.
