The day after the 2000 Guineas takes place at Newmarket, three-year-old fillies will get their chance to shine in the 1000 Guineas. Many legends of the sport have claimed victory in this fabled Classic and Sunday's renewal is shaping up to be a cracker.

Here's our free guide to the 1000 Guineas, including our best betting tips.

2024 1000 Guineas Runners

With no odds-on favourite, like there is in the 2000 Guineas, a healthy field is expected to be declared for the first fillies' Classic of the season on Sunday. The betting for the 1000 Guineas is headed by Fallen Angel, who travelled over to Ireland to win the Moyglare Stakes for Karl Burke last September.

Ylang Ylang was the last of the nine finishers in that Group One, but bounced back with a fine third in the Rockfel Stakes before claiming victory in the Fillies' Mile. Ylang Ylang will be Aidan O'Brien's sole representative on Sunday and she's run in the two best lead-up races for the 1000 Guineas. Everything points towards a big performance from Ryan Moore's mount. Personally, I see Ylang Ylang as more of a middle distance filly, and I'd be disappointed if one or two didn't prove to be quicker than her on the day.

Dance Sequence sits third in the market, despite losing out to Pretty Crystal in the Nell Gwyn Stakes. Richard Fahey's winner was cut for the 1000 Guineas on the back of that victory, but I don't think anyone sees Pretty Crystal as a potential winner of this Classic and Dance Sequence still has plenty of growing up to do.

Oisin Murphy will again partner Andrew Balding's See The Fire, who hung badly across the track when third in the Fillies' Mile. Aurelien Lemaitre will partner with Christopher Head's Ramateulle, with another top French pilot, Mickael Barzalona riding the unbeaten Godolphin second-string, Cinderella's Dream.

Regal Jubilee and Elmalka will be hoping to build on solid performances behind Folgaria in the recent Fred Darling Stakes. Richard Hannon's Star Style made a winning debut during that meeting at Newbury, and she could step straight into Classic company.

Tom Marquand will partner Porta Fortuna for Donnacha O'Brien. May Hill Stakes winner, Darnation could join stablemate Fallen Angel in the field. Hollie Doyle rides recent Newmarket winner Rolica for Jane Chapple-Hyam.

Sacred Angel will step up to a mile following an impressive juvenile campaign running over six furlongs. David Simcock's once-raced filly, Lunar Eclipse is still entered up, along with Star Music, Tamfana and Finsceal Luas.

2024 1000 Guineas Tips

In our 1000 Guineas quotes piece, Karl Burke said that DARNATION (33/1) would head to Newmarket if the ground wasn't too quick. When this guide went live on Thursday, the forecast suggested that we could get some soft in the going description on Sunday, as I was quick to take 40/1 about Darnation.

Burke's filly relished soft ground as a juvenile last season. Darnation bolted up by ten lengths on her second maiden start at Thirsk, kicked clear in the closing stages to land the Prestige Stakes at Goodwood, and ran away with the May Hill at Doncaster, where she put three lengths between herself and See The Fire in the closing stages.

Darnation was no match for Opera Singer - who was favourite for this Classic before her set-back - when the two met in the Prix Marcel Boussac, where the ground was probably a bit lively for her liking. Like Fallen Angel, Darnation is by Too Darn Hot and she's out of a Galileo mare, so I don't see why she won't have progressed again over the winter.

Sadly, we didn't get as much rain as expected on Friday and the weekend forecast is full of clouds and sunshine. There's now a chance that Darnation is kept for soft ground in the French 1000 Guineas, so I'm also going to have a punt on her market-topping stablemate, FALLEN ANGEL (10/3).

Karl Burke has been incredibly bullish about Fallen Angel's chances whenever he's spoken to the press. During the Craven meeting, the favourite worked on the gallops with one of Burke's top handicappers and cantered all over her stablemate during an impressive piece of work.

All three of her siblings did very little as juveniles, before progressing rapidly at three once stepped up in trip. This daughter of Too Darn Hot will have no problem seeing out the mile and a little cut in the ground shouldn't bother her.

Verdict

Karl Burke has two weapons to unleash in the 2024 1000 Guineas, starting with Fallen Angel, who appeals most out of the fancied runners.

When this guide went live, I backed Darnation at 40/1. I still think she will run well, given the chance, but the ground won't be as soft as I was anticipating and there's a chance she might be withdrawn on account of the going.
