2000 Guineas Preview

Punters rejoiced when it was announced that the Guineas Festival, which was cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak, would be rescheduled for the first week of June. Sadly, the gates at Newmarket will be closed to the general public, but the ITV Racing team will be in situ to broadcast the 2020 running of the 2000 Guineas.

2000 Guineas Favourite

Saturday marks the 212th running of this fabled Classic, and a strong field has assembled. Charlie Appleby’s Pinatubo ended last season with the highest juvenile rating since Frankel – himself a 2000 Guineas winner – and he’s been made the hot-favourite to secure a third Group One victory in succession this weekend.

Having swept his rivals aside at Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood, Pinatubo produced a stunning display to claim his first Group One victory in the Vincent O’Brien National Stakes. Despite the soft ground going against him, the Godolphin star still had more than enough in the tank to see off Arizona again in the Dewhurst at Newmarket, and it would take a brave punters to bet against Pinatubo comfortably getting a mile.

2000 Guineas Form Guide

Leading the fight against the favourite is Arizona, who placed second behind Pinatubo at the Curragh and again at Newmarket. Aidan O’Brien has been very pleased with how his charge has strengthened up over the winter, and Arizona seems to be the most powerful arrow in Ballydoyle’s quiver.

O’Brien has saddled five of the last eight 2000 Guineas winners, and will likely thrown three or four of his top colts into the mix. Innisfree and Mogul both finished someway behind Kameko in the Vertem Futurity Trophy at Newcastle, and both seem suited to trips further a mile. Royal Dornoch, on the other hand, managed to beat Kameko in the Royal Lodge Stakes and a case can certainly be made for him at an each-way price.

Kameko has been backed by many to give Pinatubo a run for his money. I, however, have my doubts. His half-brother, Roaring Lion needed a couple of runs to get going during his three-year-old campaign and improved as he was stepped up beyond this trip. Kameko’s jockey, Oisin Murphy has admitted his ride is carrying some early-season condition, and I think Kameko will turn out into more of a Derby contender.

Despite his flop in the Vertem Futurity Trophy, Kinross has been well-backed in the 2000 Guineas market in recent weeks. While it’s clear Ralph Beckett’s colt has plenty of potential, he’s vastly inexperienced compared to some of his rivals. He could be one who peaks towards the end of the upcoming campaign.

Military March got the better of Al Suhail in a good quality renewal of the Autumn Stakes. Both will likely fly the flag for Godolphin again in the Guineas, but Military March is bred to succeed over trips further than this, and Al Suhail will have to have improved significantly to get involved.

Another name to note further down the betting at Kenzai Warrior, who claimed Group Three glory here at Newmarket. Positive looks worthy of a mention too, as does Mums Tipple, but in truth, neither offer much appeal in the Guineas betting and seem better suited to sprinting distances.

2000 Guineas Tips

It’s very hard to side against PINATUBO, who looked an absolute superstar during 2019. Appleby’s charge has everything going for him, the only downside being that he’s never run over a mile – but that didn’t prevent the likes of Churchill, Gleneagles or Night Of Thunder winning this historic race, so it shouldn’t put punters off.

Seeing as the market leader is odds-on, though, there is scope for an each-way punt and the one who appeals to me most is WICHITA

Aidan O’Brien’s star first caught my eye when winning the Tattersalls Stakes on the Rowley Mile back in September. Wichita clocked a very good time over seven furlongs that day, a fact made more impressive when you consider he sat on the pace throughout the race before forging clear at the two pole.

Wichita was then supplemented for the Dewhurst, and ran respectably to finish third. Although he was well-held by both Pinatubo and Arizona in the end, Ryan Moore’s mount ran alone down the inside rail during the second half of the race, so he may have been a little lonely in the closing stages. Also, the two-week turnaround between those two races may have been a little too much for this son of No Nay Never – who O’Brien admitted was a little slow to come into himself at two – to cope with.

I would be surprised, and a little disappointed, if Pinatubo didn’t rubber-stamp his star quality with victory in the 2000 Guineas. You’d be better off waiting until the weekend to back him, though, as some firms may release special price boosts involving the firm favourite closer to the off.

Of those sitting at each-way prices, Wichita is the one I’ll be siding with. He impressed me greatly at two and Aidan O’Brien will have him primed to mount a strong challenge when he returns to Newmarket on Saturday.
