Day three of the Guineas Festival at Newmarket was all about the fillies, as 20 talented three-year-olds entered the stalls ahead of the 1000 Guineas.
Dermot Weld's unbeaten Tahiyra had topped the betting since the end of last season and remained solid at the head of the market throughout the day. On the back of her stablemate's poor performances in the 2000 Guineas, Aidan O'Brien's Meditate drifted markedly in the build-up to Sunday's feature.
Nell Gwyn winner, Mammas Girl was fairly weak in the market this morning, drifting out to 11/1 before coming back into 8s before the off. Ralph Beckett's Fred Darling Stakes winner, Remarquee was supported into second-favouritism, with Charlie Appleby's first string Dream Of Love also being backed.
Each-way punters latched onto Jack Channon's Caernarfon, who boasted both course-and-distance winner form and a liking for soft ground. Following Hi Royal's huge performance in the Saturday's Classic, stablemate Queen Me was being backed at lengthy prices, along with Matilda Picotte and Fairy Cross.

Once the stalls burst open, the field immediately split into two main groups. Queen Me and Matilda Picotte headed the pack on the far side of the track. Mawj and Olivia Maralda made the running on the near side, with young Billy Loughnane running a solo effort on Sweet Harmony along the stands rail.
Favourite Tahiyra was a little slowly away but soon worked her way into a prominent position. Meditate and Lezoo were held up in the far group, as Mammas Girl and Remarquee took their time in the second pack.
Approaching the dip, Oisin Murphy pushed Mawj into the lead. Chris Hayes was the first to react to this move, moving Tahiyra onto the shoulder of the leader and the two soon forged clear of the chasing pack. Just when it seemed like Dermot Weld's raider was starting to get the upper hand, Mawj found a little extra in the closing stages and hung on to hand Saaed Bin Suroor an overdue third success in this historic Classic.
Matilda Picotte made good late progress to follow the top two home in third. Caernarfon's supporters will have been delighted to see Connor Beasley's mount finish a distant fourth, ahead of 200/1 outsider Dance In The Grass, who kept on well to snatch fifth ahead of Meditate.
