Guineas Festival Preview

Traditionally staged during the first weekend of May, Newmarket’s Guineas Festival is an eagerly awaited event for all fans of flat racing. Over the course of the two days, plenty of prize money will be handed out. There’s also the small matter of the first two Classics of the season to take in, with the 2000 Guineas and 1000 Guineas headlining the weekend’s action.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought the sporting world to a stand-still during the spring of 2020, meaning both the original Guineas, and the Epsom Derby Festivals were cancelled. Thankfully, organisers have managed to push the meeting back to June and Newmarket have even picked up some prestigious races which were due to be staged at other venues, before the virus hit.

Guineas Festival Day One Schedule

For the first time in a number of years, the Guineas Festival will start on a Friday. Day Ones card is headlined by the Coronation Cup Stakes, which is traditionally held on Oaks day at Epsom.

Newmarket has managed to attract a stellar field for the rescheduled running of this Grade One, with big-race winners like Ghaiyyath, Anthony Van Dyck, Defoe and Stradivarius pencilled in to make their first starts of the new season on Friday.

The Abernant Stakes, usually staged during the Craven Meeting in April, and the Paradise Stakes precede the Coronation Cup on Friday’s card. Day One punters also have a couple of interesting handicaps and a couple of novice stakes to take in on the opening afternoon of the Guineas Festival at Newmarket.

Pinatubo is the hot-favourite for this year’s renewal of the 2000 Guineas, but the likes of Arizona and Kameko will be out to make sure Charlie Appleby’s colt doesn’t have everything his own way.
