The 1000 Guineas always takes place at the start of May. The 2021 1000 Guineas will be run at Newmarket on Sunday 2nd May.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2020 1000 Guineas was played out in June. This Classic will be moved back to its usual spot on the calendar in 2021.

2000 Guineas History

The 1000 Guineas was first run in 1814 when the Bill Clift-trained Charlotte was the first successfull filly during the Guineas Festival.

The 1000 Guineas is one of five Classic races staged in Britain. The other four at the 2000 Guineas, the Epsom Derby, the Epsom Oaks and the St Leger.

Trainer Robert Robson, who raced horses for the 4th Duke of Grafton, dominated the race in the early editions. The pair won nine 1000 Guineas' in 10 years before the run came to an end in 1828 when Bobby Pettit won with Zoe.

In more recent times the 1000 Guineas has been taken out by the big owenrship syndicates. Coolmore Stud, Godolphin, Ballymore and other leading UAE-operated studs have taken top honours.

Many of the sport's greatest fillies have won the 1000 Guineas. Great names like Pretty Polly, Sun Chariot and Oh So Sharp can be found on the honours boards at Newmarket.
