Day three at the Punchestown Festival is headlined by the Champion Stayers' Hurdle. Many of Britain and Ireland's finest staying hurdlers have ended their season with victory in this Grade One and it's the newly-crowned Cheltenham Festival hero who dominates this year's contest.

2024 Champion Stayers' Hurdle Entries

After stablemate and fellow Robcour flag-bearer Irish Point was removed from the race, Teahupoo was cut into odds-on to win the Grade One highlight at Punchestown. Gordon Elliott's star ran out a hugely impressive winner of the Stayers' Hurdle at Cheltenham, beating most of the rivals who reoppose on Thursday.

Home By The Lee kept on well to finish third at Cheltenham. Fourth-placed Buddy One followed that performance with an even better run at Aintree, where he was beaten into second by Olly Murphy's Strong Leader.

12-year-old Sire Du Berlais sits prominently in the market, despite being withdrawn from the Liverpool Hurdle by the vets on the day of the race. Paul Townend rides last year's runner-up, Asterion Forlonge, with Patrick Mullins partnering fellow ten-year-old Monkfish.

Henry De Bromhead runs promising mare Lantry Lady and the teenager Summerville Boy. Jarlath Fahey's Whatcouldhavebeen also features in the field, along with Franciscan Rock for Mouse Morris and the returning No Looking Back for Oliver McKiernan.

2024 Champion Stayers Hurdle Tips

There's no doubt that Teahupoo is, by some distance, the best-staying hurdler we have in the sport at the moment. Punchestown has never been a happy hunting ground for Gordon Elliott's seven-year-old, but stacks of rain has been forecast for early on Thursday morning, so the ground should be suitably soft for Teahupoo come 6:00pm.

Despite his overwhelming superiority, I have no desire to back Teahupoo at odds-on. Asterion Forlonge was tempting, given his excellent record around this track. However, I find myself drawn to LANTRY LADY (25/1), who'll appreciate every bit of rain that falls during the morning of the contest.

Henry De Bromhead's mare went into the Mares' Hurdle at Cheltenham on the back of two emphatic wins at Gowran Park - with those victories spaced 11 months apart. Having held his mount up early, Jack Kennedy was starting to sneak into the race on the outside when Lantry Lady dived at the second-last and was immediately on the back foot. In the end, Lossiemouth ran out an impressive winner, with Lantry Lady following two of her stablemates home in fourth.

With the second and third that day, Telmesomethinggirl and Hispanic Moon set to take Lossiemouth on again on Saturday, De Bromhead has decided to up Lantry Lady to three miles. On breeding, Rachael Blackmore's mount should have no trouble getting this distance. Whether this jump in distance comes a little early in her career, only time will tell, but Lantry Lady is the only unknown quantity in this field. If you take Teahupoo out of the equation, this race is incredibly open and she holds plenty of appeal at 25/1.
