The fourth and final day at the Leopardstown Christmas Festival is headlined by the Matheson Hurdle. Just four runners have been declared for Friday's renewal of this lucrative Grade One, which has been won by legendary names like Istabraq and Hurricane Fly.

2023 Matheson Hurdle Tips - Impaire Et Passe

State Man and IMPAIRE ET PASSE (2/1) take each other on for the first time in Friday's feature. Willie Mullins had said at the start of the season that the two stablemates might avoid one another until the Champion Hurdle. It seems that Impaire Et Passe's defeat in the Hatton's Grace Hurdle has forced the team to change plans.

As a novice, Impaire Et Passe was relaxed and professional. On his comeback at Fairyhouse, however, Paul Townend was wrestling with his mount before the off and Mullins' five-year-old pulled hard throughout the early stages of the race.

When Teahupoo loomed up on the leader's shoulder on the approach to the last, I was expecting the proven stayer to forge clear. The fact that Gordon Elliott's star could only edge a length beyond Impaire Et Passe - who had done plenty wrong during the contest - tells you everything you need to know about the runner-up.

State Man is an excellent yardstick and, if the favourite does turn his stablemate away, I'm guessing that Impaire Et Passe will no longer be in Champion Hurdle contention.

I, however, remain convinced that Impaire Et Passe is a horse of the highest caliber and I'd be surprised if he didn't improve plenty for that reappearance run. Daryl Jacob's mount handled heavy ground in the Moscow Flyer last season and testing conditions will put extra emphasis on his proven stamina.
