We take a look through the feature race on day one of Irish Champions Weekend and provide readers with our 2020 Irish Champion Stakes tips.

The opening day of Irish Champions Weekend is headlined by one of the biggest races on the Irish flat racing calendar. Many of the sport’s most famous names have travelled to Leopardstown and claimed victory in the Irish Champion Stakes, and one of the highest-rated horses in recent times will carry the tag of favouritism into Saturday’s renewal.

Another front-running masterclass in the Juddmonte International Stakes has seen Ghaiyyath join the illustrious list of horses to reach a rating of 130.

Charlie Appleby’s gelding has been relentless this season, running his rivals ragged in the Coronation Cup, the Coral-Eclipse and again at York, where Ghaiyyath trounced Magical, Lord North and Kameko to land the fourth Group One of his career.

Magical was powerless to resist Ghaiyyath at York, crossing the line three-lengths behind her rival in second. Aidan O’Brien’s mare won this race in excellent style 12 months ago, and should be extremely competitive once again.

Japan will join Magical in the field at Leopardstown, having recovered from the foot problem that plagued the first half of his season. The Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe is the main objective for Japan and I fear he’ll be in need of the run this weekend, having spent almost 50 days off the track.

Aidan O’Brien has also confirmed Armory in the final field for Saturday's Irish Champion Stakes. Armory did well to win after finding his path blocked a number of times last time out. That was only at Group Three level, though, and Armory couldn't get anywhere close to Magical in the Tattersalls Gold Cup.

French-raider Sottsass will make his British and Irish debut in the Irish Champion Stakes. Jean-Claude Rouget’s four-year-old has won the Prix du Jockey Club and the Prix Ganay over this trip. He too will head to the Arc after running at Leopardstown, as he bids to build on his third-place finish in last year’s event.

Jessica Harrington’s Leo De Fury is the last of the seven entrants, but his odds suggest anything better than seventh would be a good result.

This race is all about Ghaiyyath. If Charlie Appleby’s charge is again at the peak of his powers, no-one will be strong enough to deny him. That being said, I think there are a couple of reasons why it could pay to take the favourite on with an each-way punt.

Firstly, Leopardstown’s track, with its sweeping turn and relatively short home straight, doesn’t always suit galloping, front-running types. Second, on the two occasions when Ghaiyyath has failed to produce the goods, the ground has been soft. The going is currently good-to-yielding at Leopardstown, and there’s some rain forecast to hit the track on Friday afternoon.

I’m sure Aidan O’Brien and Ballydoyle will have devised a tactic to try and upset Ghaiyyath’s rhythm, with maybe Japan or Armory going forward to pester the leader. MAGICAL will be the main beneficiary of any Ballydoyle scheme, and I think it could be worth backing her against the market leader.

Verdict

Ghaiyyath will be unopposable for some, but I don't mind taking the favourite on with MAGICAL.

Winner of this race last year, Magical has remained in very good form this season. She has plenty of course form, where Ghiayyath does not, and any team tactics will be employed for her benefit.
