We look through the field for the 2020 Irish 1000 Guineas and provide readers with our tips for the Curragh on Saturday 13th June.

The evening after the colts have strutted their stuff on the famous Curragh turf, fillies have their chance to shine in the Irish 1000 Guineas. Many of the sports finest fillies have claimed Classic glory at the Curragh, with the names of Attraction and In The Groove standing out on the honours boards.

Jessica Harrington landed her first Irish Classic in this race two years ago, as the brilliant Alpha Centauri romped to victory. Having enjoyed a stunning campaign with her juvenile fillies in 2019, Harrington was spoilt for choice as to which of her top fillies she would send to the Curragh, and it looks like the Gold Cup-winning trainer will fire two arrows at this huge prize.

The first of those being Albigna, who claimed Group One glory with a superb performance in the 2019 Prix Marcel Boussac. Harrington’s filly had disappointed with a limp display behind Love in the Moyglare prior to the Arc Festival, but left that performance well and truly behind her at Longchamp.

Albigna then ran a cracker at the Breeders’ Cup, staying on from a horrible wide draw to place a highly-respectable fourth. Paddy Power make Albigna their 7/4 favourite to triumph in the Irish 1000 Guineas, and it’s hard to build a case against her.

Irish 1000 Guineas Form Guide

Alpine Star is somewhat of a forgotten horse in Harrington’s ranks, having been off the track since a narrow victory in the Debutante Stakes at the end of August. Alpine Star left Love floundering three-lengths in her wake that day. Yet, the recent 1000 Guineas winner was clearly under-par – trailing home fifth - and Petit Mustique, who Alpine Star narrowly edged past, wasn’t deemed good enough to warrant even an ante-post Classic entry.

Splitting Harrington’s fillies at the head of the market we find Aidan O’Brien’s supposed first string, Peaceful. On the back of a seven-length maiden triumph, Peaceful went down narrowly to Born With
Pride in a Listed race at Newmarket at the back-end of last season. This daughter of Galileo will certainly improve as she steps up beyond the mile, but that doesn’t mean she can’t challenge for top honours on Saturday.

So Wonderful may still be a maiden, but she showed promise in placing behind Love, Alpine Star and Cayenne Pepper in pattern races last season. I would be amazed if she had improved enough to break her duck on this huge stage, but she could be worth an each-way punt on day two of the Irish Guineas Festival.

Fancy Blue got the better of A New Dawn to win a Listed prize over course-and-distance in the autumn. Having moved stables during the winter, she will become Donnacha O’Brien’s first-ever Classic runner this weekend. However, the fact that Aidan was only too keen to ship her off to his son’s budding stable tells me that he doesn’t think she’s as strong as the fillies who remain at his disposal.

New York Girl too has form that ties in with A New Dawn, having snatched victory in the Weld Park Stakes away from her stablemate. Many winners of the Weld Park Stakes have gone on to challenge for Classic honours at three, and this daughter of New Approach is expected to be even more effective at three. Joseph O’Brien’s filly is definitely a contender.

Ridenza comes into this Classic on the back of a solitary outing at two. While that performance was an impressive one, the form of the maiden she won doesn’t look particularly strong and I’d rather back one with a little more experience.

In contract, Soul Search was highly-tried last season, placing three times in pattern company. Like So Wonderful, she comes into 2020 with her maiden tag intact, and I doubt even ger Lyons will be expecting Soul Search to shake that off in Classic company.

Although a chance has to be given to Peaceful and Alpine Star, I’m fully expecting ALBIGNA to win this weekend, and prove she’s the best miler in this generation of fillies. The way she conquered the competition out in France was extremely impressive. As was her performance in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies’ Turf, where the draw practically gave her no chance of victory, but she still managed to finish up the tail of the winners in fourth.

Albigna has seen out a mile very well, on both soft and fast ground. Shane Foley’s mount is tactically versatile, she’s won at the course before and her breeding suggests she’s much more than just a precocious two-year-old. Albigna is certainly the one to beat at the Curragh.

With plenty of rain expected the hit County Kildare in the days leading up to the Irish 1000 Guineas, I quite fancy having an each-way punt on NEW YORK GIRL for Joseph O’Brien. During a recent stable tour, Joseph seemed very excited about New York Girl’s chances of enjoying a successful season at the highest level.

The Irish Oaks is her primary target, but she will certainly see out the mile well and softer ground would only boost her chances. At 12/1, she looks a strong bet to make her way into the placings.

I'm confident that Albigna will prove herself to be the best of her generation over this trip, so I have no reservations backing her at 7/4.

Conditions on Saturday could suit New York Girl too, so I'll have a small each-way saver on Joseph O'Brien's Irish Oaks contender.
