2022 Irish 2000 Guineas Betting Tips, Best Bookmakers & Free Bets
Over 100 years after Newmarket introduced the British equivalent of this Classic, the Irish 2000 Guineas was created. Since 1921, the top trainers from across Ireland have pointed their most talented three-year-old colts towards the Curragh at the end May, with the hope of training a Classic winner and landing the bountiful first prize.
Like the British Guineas, the Irish 2000 Guineas is only open to three-year-old thoroughbreds. Both colts and fillies are allowed to enter the 2000 Guineas. However, the Irish 1000 Guineas is open to fillies only, so they are usually sent there, allowing the colts to lock horns in the Irish 2000 Guineas.
The Irish 1000 Guineas headlines the first day of the Irish Guineas Festival, taking pride of place in the centre of Saturday's card.

After the Irish 2000 Guineas
As the Irish St Leger is open to horses of three and above, Ireland does not have a recognised version of the Triple Crown. Runners in the Irish 2000 Guineas often go on to run in the British Derby at Epsom, or the Irish Derby, held at the Curragh at the end of June.
If their trainer decideds to keep them over a mile, then Irish 2000 Guineas runners will often line up in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. The ten-furlong Coral Eclipse, run at Sandown during their July Festival, is also an option.
Irish 2000 Guineas History
The first Irish 2000 Guineas was run at the Curragh back in 1921. Hard Ridden came out victorious in the 1958 renewal of the Irish 2000 Guineas, before going onto win the Epsom Derby just over a week later.
As there is usually three weeks between the British and Irish 2000 Guineas, horses often attempt to land an audacious double. Right Track was the first to complete the 2000 Guineas double in 1969. His accomplishment has been repeated just seven times, with the most recent 2000 Guineas double winner being Churchill, who collected both prizes in 2017.
Churchill’s trainer, Aidan O’Brien is the most successful trainer in the history of the Irish 2000 Guineas, training the winner on 11 occasions.
Tommy Burns Snr, who partnered Soldennis to victory in the in the first ever running of this Classic, is the most successful jockey in Irish 2000 Guineas history with five wins. Martin Quinn reached the same total of five when he guided Khosro to victory in 1941.
The Irish 2000 Guineas is open to horses from all over the world and trainers from the UK have tasted plenty of success at the Curragh. Richard Hannon Snr, Sir Michael Stoute and John Gosden have all saddled the winner of the Irish 2000 Guineas.
Ger Lyons won his first Classic as a trainer in 2020, as unbeaten colt Siskin powered clear of Vatican City to win the Irish 2000 Guineas. 2021 saw veteran trainer Jim Bolger saddle a 1-2, as Mac Swiney beat Poetic Flare.

Irish 2000 Guineas Betting Guide
The recent history of the Irish 2000 Guineas tells us that backing one of the fancied runners is usually the way to go. Up until 2018, only three horses had carried double-figure odds into the winners’ enclosure since the turn of the Millennium.
In the last two years, that trend has been turned on its head. Romanised was a 25/1 shot when he won the Irish 2000 Guineas in 2018, with Phoenix Of Spain winning the 2019 renewal, despite going off as an unfancied 16/1 shot.
The Curragh Track Report
The track at the Curragh a right-handed, horseshoe-shaped track and spans two miles in distance. Although the home straight is only a couple of furlongs long, there is a chute for races between five furlongs and a mile.
Stamina is at a premium at the Curragh. The track is galloping in nature and features a stiff uphill finish.
