One of the world's most lucrative flat races takes place at Tokyo racecourse on Sunday, as a classy field enters the stalls ahead of the Japan Cup. This one-and-a-half-mile Grade One was created in 1981 and has been won by many of Japan's greatest race horses, including Deep Impact, Almond Eye and Equinox.

Here our free guide to the 2024 Japan Cup, including our best betting tips.

2024 Japan Cup Entries

Leading the way in the betting is three-year-old filly Cervinia, who will be looking to complete a Group One hat-trick after victories in the Japanese Oaks and the Shuka Sho.

Do Deuce will be a more familiar name with European fans, having run in the 2022 Arc, and Yasuo Tomomichi's five-year-old jumped up to second in the market after claiming an overdue victory in the Tenno Sho last month.

Then come the European raiders, with Auguste Rodin sitting just ahead of Goliath in the market. Aidan O'Brien's seven-time Grade One winner finished fifth as Goliath stormed to victory in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Francis-Henri Graffard's star warmed up for his first trip to Japan by winning the Prix du Conseil last month. Auguste Rodin, meanwhile, hasn't been seen since that narrow defeat to Economics in the Irish Champion Stakes, but impressed Aidan O'Brien during a racecourse gallop at Tokyo this week.

Justin Palace also sits prominently in the market, having fourth to Do Deuce in the Tenno Sho. Shin Emperor will be looking to bounce back after a disappointing 12th in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

The third European raider in the field, German star Fantastic Moon can be backed at 20/1. Other probable runners include former Japanese Oaks winner Stars On Earth, Juddmonte International fifth Durezza, and the first and second from the Takarazuka Kinen in June, Blow The Horn and Sol Oriens.

2024 Japan Cup Tips

A low draw has proven to be hugely beneficial in the Japan Cup. Nine of the last ten winners have been drawn in stall six or lower, with stalls one and two providing the bulk of the victors.

Favourite, Cervinia has been placed fairly wide out in stall nine, one gate outside of Auguste Rodin. Christophe-Patrice Lemaire's mount has looked good when landing the final two legs of the Fillies' Triple Crown and she gets both age and sex allowances. We have, however, only seen three three-year-olds win this lucrative contest since the turn of the Millennium and that wide draw is a worry.

Auguste Rodin has been prone to a blow-out or two down the years and he hasn't been seen since the Irish Champion Stakes in mid-September. Goliath, on the other hand, warmed up for his trip to Japan with a solid Grade Two win at Longchamp last month and Francis-Henri Graffard's surprise King George winner has landed a much kinder draw in stall one.

Personally, I will always favour the Japanese runners on home soil and DO DEUCE (11/4) looks to have a massive chance.

Yasuo Tomomichi's star has been in the form of his life over the past 12 months. Having finished fourth in this race behind Equinox, where he ran too keen and was held up too far off the pace, Do Deuce stormed home from the rear to win a top-quality renewal of the Arima Kinen last December. Yutaka Take's mount then finished a close fifth in the Sheema Classic, before running just once more during the regular Japanese season.

On his prep-run for the Japan Cup, Do Deuce again surged home from well off the pace to win the Tenno Sho here at Tokyo. That outing should put Tomomichi's five-year-old spot on for this assignment and Do Deuce has been drawn perfectly in stall three.
