Established in 1981, the Japan Cup has quickly become the most famous flat race in Japanese horse racing. Many of Japan's greatest horses, like Deep Impact and Gentildonna have won the Japan Cup during it's history, and a strong field will like up at Tokyo on Saturday.

We've taken a look through the betting and the confirmed field, before picking our top Japan Cup tips.

Topping the market we find Contrail, who's enjoyed an unbeaten three-year-old campaign thus far. On his last start, Contrail battled bravely to complete the Triple Crown in the Japanese St Leger, over a trip which seemed a little on the stuff side.

Yoshito Yahagi's star will be much more comfortable back over the Japan Cup distance, and won the Tokyo Yushen here at Tokyo in May. Contrail sits prominently in the betting for the 2021 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, which shows he's a colt with immense quality.

2020 Japan Cup Runners

Sitting closest to Contrail we find Almond Eye, who won the Japan Cup as a three-year-old in 2018.

Sakae Kunieda's mare has been beaten in three of her last six starts, but warmed up for a return to the Japan Cup with a narrow win in the Tenno Sho, and will have one final crack at a Grade One before being retired.

Other notable runners in the 2020 Japan Cup include Daring Tact, who was recently crowned the Champion Filly of the Season in Japan.  Victory in the Shuka Sho sealed the Fillies' Triple Crown for this talented four-year-old, and she's the only other runner sitting on a single-figure price.

Way To Paris is the only European raider in this year's Japan Cup. Mirco Demuro's mount won the Grand Prix de Saint Cloud earlier in the season, but was found wanting in the Grand Prix de Paris and could only finish ninth in the Arc.

Glory Vase bolted up in the 2019 Hong Kong Vase under Joao Moreira in 2019, and won a Grade Two at Kyoto on his most recent start. Curren Bouquetd'or finished a close second in this race 12 months ago, but has been beaten in lesser races since.

Kiseki and World Premier also have previous Japan Cup form. However, their odds, plus the odds of the other runners we haven't covered, suggest the prominent figures in the betting have this between themselves.

Daring Tact carries an unbeaten record into Sunday feature, and will be gaining weight for both age and sex. I am a little worried about the form of the filly's races she's been running in this term, and she'll have to take her game to a new level to win this historic race.

Almond Eye has a chance of ending her career on an almighty high, especially after a kind draw in stall two. I fear, however, that she'll need CONTRAIL to underperform if she is to retain her crown.

Like Daring Tact, Yoshito Yahagi's star has enjoyed an unbeaten three-year-old campaign. Contrail landed Japan's version of the Triple Crown, with his best performance coming in the Japanese Derby, which is run over course-and-distance.

Contrail was drawn in stall five prior to that three-length triumph, and he's been placed in barrier six on Sunday. I can't see any reason to bet against Contrail, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him backed into odds-on before the off.

Verdict

The public will be roaring Almond Eye home on her career swansong, but Contrail has been the best horse in Japan this year, and still offers plenty of value at 13/8.
