A passionate crowd gathered at Kempton Park on Boxing Day, ready to enjoy another thrilling renewal of the King George VI Chase.

Paul Nicholls has won this famous race 12 times and he ran three top chasers, including ante-post favourite Bravemansgame. In the days leading up to the King George, a flood of money arrived for L'Homme Presse and it was Venetia Williams' Cheltenham Festival winner who carried the tag of favouritism into the contest.

Bravemansgame, Hitman and Nicholls' third runner, Frodon were all weak in the betting during the build-up. Henry De Bromhead's raider, Envoi Allen sat firmly at third-favourite in the market, as each-way backers placed their faith in Ahoy Senor and Venetia Williams second-string, Royale Pagaille.

Bryony Frost made all the running on Frodon when they lifted the King George two years ago, so it was no surprise to see Frost make the running once again. Ahoy Senor sat just behind the leader on the rail, with L'Homme Presse and Bravemansgame sitting in the second rank.

Charlie Deutch's mount kept jumping out to his left around this tight right-handed track. That greatly inconvenienced Bravemansgame, who was pitched wide on the track throughout the race.

Although the pace was far from rapid, it was too quick for Envoi Allen, who laboured at the rear throughout. On the long turn for home, Frodon, L'Homme Presse and Bravemansgame broke clear of the chasing pack and as Bryony Frost's mount gave way, we looked set for a fierce battle between the market leaders.

L'Homme Presse was travelling best turning for home. Harry Cobden was forced to bump his mount along rounding the bend, but Bravemansgame responded for presure brilliantly and took the lead on the approach to the last. Bravemansgame jumped the last brillaintly and kicked for home. L'Homme Presse, however, landed a little steep and Deutsch was flung from the saddle, meaning Paul Nicholls celebrated a 13th King George victory.

Royale Pagaille came through to snatch second ahead of Frodon. Paul Nicholls confirmed after the race that Bravemansgame would now be freshened up ahead of a tilt at the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
