Aidan O'Brien watched son, Joseph lift the Melbourne Cup in 2018, and Ireland's Champion Trainer will have high hopes of getting his own name on the honours boards this time around. His three-year-old colt, Tiger Moth tops the current market, having followed his runner-up finish in the Irish Derby with a four-length romp in a Group Three at Leopardstown.
2020 Melbourne Cup Runners
Despite suffering a surprise loss to Arcadia Queen in the Neds Stakes, Russian Camelot remains the second-favourite for the 2020 Melbourne Cup. Danny O'Brien's Australian Derby and Underwood Stakes winner is yet to step foot beyond 12 furlongs, but he's clearly a talented sort and he's been handed a handy weight of just 8-6.
Verry Elleegant got the better of Aidan O'Brien's Anthony Van Dyck in the recent Caulfield Cup. Despite losing by a head on the day, the former Epsom Derby winner was cut into 8/1 for the Melbourne Cup, with Verry Elleegant also coming in to the same price.
Finche was backed into favouritism ahead of last year's Melbourne Cup, but could only finish seventh in the end. Chris Waller's six-year-old was only beaten a length-and-a-quarter that day, and has shaped with promise over shorter trips this season.
Fifth in the Cup 12 months ago was Surprise Baby. Although she was well-beaten behind Verry Elleegant in the Turnbull Stakes on his last start, Paul Preusker's gelding can also be found sitting on a single-figure price.
Sir Dragonet and Nickajack Cave have joined local stables ahead of the Melbourne Cup, and their form in Ireland this season puts both right in the picture. Prince Of Arran has placed second and third in the last two Melbourne Cups, and Charlie Fellowes globe-trotter ran a cracker to finish fourth in the Caulfield Cup.
German-raider Ashrun could carry Australian Bloodstocks blue and black silks into battle. As could stablemates Mugatoo and Mustajeer.
Joseph O'Brien has four runners currently in the 2020 Melbourne Cup betting, with Master Of Reality sitting on the shorter price. Willie Mullins could throw True Self into the mix, while Dashing Willougby represents Andrew Balding, despite his last-place finish at Caulfield earlier this month.
Winning-most owner in the Melbourne Cup, Lloyd Williams has King Of Leogrance to cheer on, along with Joseph O'Brien's runners.
Anthony and Sam Freeman will be represented by four-year-old Warning, while Oceanex, Django Freeman and Persan are also worth watching.
Last year's winner, Vow And Declare will return to Flemington to defend his crown. Sadly, Danny O'Brien's champion has been woefully out of form ever since, and can be found at a lengthy price of 50/1.
