One of the world's most famous horse races takes place at Flemington racecourse in the early hours of Tuesday morning, as 24 top stayers take part in the 2021 Melbourne Cup.

"The race that stops a nation" has been the flagship event in Australian horse racing since it's creation in 1861, and the winner of this two-mile Grade One handicap will hand connections a staggering first prize of $4.5m.

The final field has been confirmed and the draw has been made for this year's Melbourne Cup. We've taken a look through the betting and picked out two runners to back at each-way prices.

Incentivise will go into this year's Melbourne Cup as the overwhelming favourite, having made it nine races unbeaten with a superb victory in the Caulfield Cup. Andrew Balding's Spanish Mission has been mixing it with the best stayers in Europe this season and should relish the fast ground at Flemington on Tuesday. The only other runner sitting on a single-figure price is defending champion, Twilight Payment, who was last seen finishing a very close second in the Irish St Leger.

There's no denying that they are the stand-out candidates to win this historic race. However, this huge handicap is known for producing upsets, so I'd much rather take the market leaders on with two runners sitting at appealing each-way prices.

2021 Melbourne Cup Tips 1 - Floating Artist

Since moving to Australia from Richard Hannon's yard at the start of the autumn, FLOATING ARTIST has been in the form of his life.

Teodore Nugent's mount won a couple of $40k handicaps over trips which should have been too sharp for him. Nugent was then forced to make the running aboard the odds-on in the Coogny Cup, and Floating Artist got a little outpaced by Duais and Wentworth in the closing stages, losing out by a neck.

Another narrow defeat followed in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup. Floating Artist was kept wide behind the leaders that day, travelling powerfully throughout. Nugent pulled his mount down towards the rail to mount a challenge, but the pair came up a head short of winner Lunar Flare.

During his time in Britain, Floating Artist was campaigned like a stayer, finishing fifth in the 14-furlong Copper Horse Handicap at Royal Ascot in 2020, while also finishing behind Trueshan in a conditions race run over the same trip at Salisbury. Maher & Eustace's recruit sneaks into the Melbourne Cup right at the bottom of the weights and he can run a massive race pushed back up in trip.

2021 Melbourne Cup Tips 2 - Persan

Floating Artist's stablemate, PERSAN ran a storming race in last year's Melbourne Cup. A slow start meant that Michael Dee had to bide his time at the rear of the field. Dee made his move down the back straight, making up plenty of ground before finding some clean air down on the rail. Persan kept on all the way down the home straight, hitting the line hard back in fifth.

Since then, Persan has been beaten on all six of his starts, and underwent a gelding operation back in May. There have, however, been some encouraging performances along the way, with Maher & Eustace's five-year-old finishing a close second in the Easter Cup and third behind Floating Artist over a mile at Flemington.

Last time out in the Caulfield Cup, Persan was taken straight to the front by Linda Meech. As Incentivise powered to victory, fellow pace-maker Delphi faded out the back. Persan, meanwhile, stuck to his guns valiantly, holding on to finish in third place.

Persan returns to Flemington carrying five pounds more on his back than last year. Yet, given a more alert start and a little more luck in running, I see no reason why Luke Currie's mount cannot match, or even better last year's Melbourne Cup result.

We're taking the fancied horses on with Floating Artist and Persan at each-way prices.
