One of the world's most famous horse races takes place at Flemington racecourse on Tuesday, as a capacity field of 24 runners takes part in the 2022 Melbourne Cup.
"The race that stops a nation" has been the flagship event in Australian horse racing since its creation in 1861. The winner of this two-mile Grade One handicap will ensure their spot in the annals of sporting history, while also handing connections a staggering first prize of $4.5m.
We've taken a look through the betting for this year's Melbourne Cup and picked out two runners to back at each-way prices.

After landing a lovely draw in stall nine, Deauville Legend's stranglehold on the Melbourne Cup betting strengthened. James Ferguson has been preparing his raider for this assignment since his excellent victory over Secret State in the Great Voltigeur Stakes and two-time Cup-winning jockey, Kerrin McEvoy has been booked to take the ride.
While the case for Deauville Legend is clearly a very strong one, I do have my reservations.
It's been over 80 years since a three-year-old has won the Melbourne Cup. Deauville Legend may have proven his stamina over 13 furlongs, but two miles is unknown territory and we've got no idea how well he travels, as Ferguson has never run his colt outside of England.
Deauville Legend could simply be a class above his rivals, in what seems to be a slightly substandard renewal of the Melbourne Cup. Yet, 11/4 (3.75) seems far too short.
2022 Melbourne Cup Tip 1 - Without A Fight

Knights Order was on my shortlist, until Gai Waterhouse's front-runner landed the worst draw of all out in stall 24. WITHOUT A FIGHT wasn't handed a particularly favourable barrier either, but Verry Elleegant proved classy enough to win the Melbourne Cup from stall 18 last year and I fancy Simon and Ed Crisford's five-year-old could follow in her footsteps.
Without A Fight brings some strong European form to the table. Crisford's gelding comfortably beat 107-rated John Leeper in both the Grand Cup Stakes and the Silver Cup at York. On his final outing before making the trip to Flemington, Without A Fight stayed on strongly to finish second in the Godolphin Stakes, where he was giving five pounds to the impressive winner, Siskany.
Unlike Deauville Legend, Without A Fight has proven himself outside of the UK, having lost out by a head to future Group One winner Hukum in the Dubai City Of Gold at Meydan last March. The Crisford's have been one of the in-form stables in England during the second half of the flat season and newly crowned Champion Jockey, William Buick will take the ride on Tuesday.
2022 Melbourne Cup Tip 2 - Numerian

Winning form on soft ground could be vital going into this year's Melbourne Cup Carnival. Without A Fight has won twice and placed third twice from his four starts on soft ground, so that's another box our first selection has ticked off.
Montefilia caught the eye as she stayed on to finish fourth in the Caulfield Cup and David Payne's mare is a proven winner on heavy ground. At the prices, though, I'd rather side with NUMERIAN, who brings stronger seasonal form to the table than many of the leading contenders and can currently be backed at 50/1.
Having made the switch from Ireland to Annabel Neasham's yard in September of 2021, it took Numerian a few runs to find his feet. On his fourth start for new connections, Neasham's recruit landed the Listed Gosford Gold Cup, before following up in a Group Two at Eagle Farm back in June.
Following an 82-day break, Numerian finished a close second behind Knights Order in the Chelmsford Stakes and placed second again in the General Hill. Tommy Berry's mount was last seen finishing a close fifth in the Caulfield Cup, where he kept on gamely from a prominent position before being passed by quicker closers in the final 100 yards.
During his time with Joseph O'Brien, Numerian beat Sir Dragonet - sixth in the 2020 Melbourne Cup and a two-time Grade One winner in Australia - in a Listed race on heavy ground at Naas. Numerian shaped like this step up to two miles will really suit and I wouldn't be surprised if Neasham's six-year-old featured in the finish.
