Myer Classic history
The Myer Classic has been a staple of the Melbourne Cup Carnival for some time now and since becoming a Group 1 in 2004, the popularity of the fillies and mares race has only grown.
That gave Derby Day four Group 1 races and the Myer Classic, although the less important of all four, gained traction as one of the better betting races on the card, which also includes the Coolmore Stud Stakes and Kennedy Mile.
First run in 1988, the Myer Classic was formerly registered as the Empire Rose Stakes and it has long been attributed to some champion winners. There have also been some international winners, including New Zealand champion Miss Potential which won in 2004 – the first time the Myer Classic ran at the highest level.
Conditions of the Myer Classic have changed throughout the years. It used to be run as a set weights and penalties mile before being opened to three-year-old fillies. That forced handicappers to change the Myer Classic to a weight-for-age race.
Three-year-old filly Shoals was a winner in 2017 when carrying a luxury weight of 50kg. More and more fillies are having success in the Myer Classic and punters are identifying this trait.
Myer Classic betting
The Myer Classic always features a big field and punters don't have any trouble finding winners at value each way odds.
2017 winner Shoals paid $4.80 to win, which was considered good value given she was the favourite and carrying a very light weight. Two long-shot runners finished in the money to boost trifecta payouts and that's the kind of value punters find when betting the Myer Classic.
It also pays to find the potential champion winners. It's a good horses' race and although there has been the odd upset in the Flemington feature, punters should stick with the runners bringing in exposed form to Flemington.
Bookmakers often open betting for the Myer Classic a few months in advance of the race as there are multiple form races for the entrants. Punters can secure a good price in the ante-post markets for most runners in the Myer Classic.
Myer Classic form guide
The Group 2 Rose Of Kingston Stakes and Group 2 Tristarc Stakes are good form guides leading into the Myer Classic. The winners are often well-weighted for the Myer Classic and punters should look at both races as form guides.
2017 winner Shoals came through the Thousand Guineas when running second and we're expecting more fillies to come through the Guineas and race in the Myer Classic.
It's not a good form guide for the likes of the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup or Cox Plate, however, with no winner in the last 20 years going on to win either of those three features. The Emirates Stakes and Railway Stakes are better races to follow.
